Gas Masks

Unread postby Schweinshaxe » Mon 17 Oct 2005, 18:25:08

I've always found gas masks a bit scary. They look like they were designed to look as menacing as possible. Like a terminator pig from Hell or something. I also remember the horror stories from the army when the officers told us that we had to eat our own vomit if we puked in the gas masks during the tear gas tests.

Take a look at the 'USA MIL': M2-10A1-6. It would be enough to scare off all post-PO zombies without firing a single shot. If you want to visit the Blue Oyster Bar (known from Police Academy) I'd recommend the Dutch (Netherland) "Volksgasmasker". Look how nicely the mask matches the suit...

Gas masks were issued to all civilians in the UK including babies during WWII. There effectiveness was questionable but it helped give a sense of seriousness and show the country cared about everyone.

Israelis were buying gasmasks during the Iraq-Kuwait war.

It all depends on what the threat is, for nuclear attack you need a full NBC suit which is supposed to be replaced regularly. Also, you need a supply of appropriate filters.

NBC is a nightmare scenario for war fighting, war is hell enough as it is.

I actually own a pair of NBC suits myself.

After 911, it seemed a prudent gesture. After Anthrax started showing up in the mail... more important.

But after researching "dirty bomb" potential for terrorism I figured it was like condoms.

Rather have it & not need it, than...

Of course it's a slim chance we would make it to the suits if we needed them. But I didn't want to be sitting at home after learning a dirty bomb went off, with my good intentions... and nothing else.

Went with the Canadian Military version with NATO filters... a few hundred bucks. They are basically a charcoal suit covered by a heavy cloth suit, and lots of rubber. Only good for a single dose.

Of course I live in Houston, so if it happened in July I'd probably die from heat stroke inside those heavy suits before the bugs got me.

Hopefully I wasted $500.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

I had anti-NBC training in the army, and it wasn't too comfortable what we heard about the suits - An average suit doesn't withstand a chemical agent very long...
