What's More Importent: Warm House or Driving?

Are you willing to live in a really cold house to save money for gas?

I'll bet a lot of folks will turn the temp way down to save money for gas. As for me, we already drive as little as possible. If that means having a cold house in order to have enough money to do that driving, well that's the way it will have to be.

I think for a lot of people, it is not a matter of being willing...it is a matter of having to live in a colder home in order to keep driving. One must get to work if you intend to keep the roof over your head, even if it is colder under that roof than before.

I'de be willing to live with a temperature as low as 55 if I had to. I can always wear coat if I need to.

I don't drive - I take the train. House heating is a wood (or anything else flammable) burner. So no thermostat or what have you, couldn't tell you how warm it was. Only thermostats are on the boiler, fridge and cooker.

I hate being cold, so if it's a choice between gas for the chainsaw, or gas for the car, the chainsaw wins.

The coldest weather I've ever experienced was in Houston, Texas. It was about 12 degrees or something. Being a San Diegan and having grown up on balmy weather all the time, it was quite a shock. I don't spend a dime on heating. Air conditioning: a fan and some water for evaporative cooling. My dough goes for gasoline.

Gas comes first.

We don't spend a dime on home heating or air conditioning. We open or close windows and blinds to regulate inside air temperature and that works remarkably.

We do, however, consume more gas than we like even though we own only high efficiency vehicles (50 mpg BMW motorcycle, 45 mpg civic, 35 mpg Xb) there's little we can do about it at this point.

People want both, gas & a warm house and everything else. If they can't have everything they want, they will go nuts.

I would only recommend nuts for eating, but pinecones can be used for heating.

Rogerhb,

I agree fully. As a vegetarian I'm always eating a wide variety of fruit and nuts trying to maintain my 92 kg body weight. Pinecones for heating?? Lean something new every day!!

I don't drive every single day out of the month like everyone else.
So a warm house will always be there for me.
My work is just down the street right now, and I ride a pretty shitty bicycle.
If I have to commute further, I'll get a lighter, newer type of bike.
If I need to go on a leisurely, 200+ mile jaunt, then that's what a motorcycle is for.
