PC-Turnoff Organization was founded to make parents aware of the risks associated with excessive computer use by their children, and provide information to help guide them. While the computer is a wonderful tool, like many things in children's lives, limits must be set for their own safety and well being. Yes I remember my parents telling me that I shouldn't spend too much time behind the TV and the computer. At one point we had an arrangement that I was allowed to spend 1 1/2 hour per day in front of a screen.

Now I'm spending most of my time at work behind a computer and make a decent living of it. Ironic isn't it. Haven't heard my parents complain though.

Of course a kid should spend enough time playing ball and those kind of things. But that does not justify throwing the telly and the computer out of the window. I don't think that computers or TV's are evil. You just have to filter through the crap which is on it. It tends to numb people instead of stimulating them.

Consider the alternative to people spending a lot of time working on a computer, which is people spending a lot more time working at a desk with pen and paper. Neither person gets any useful physical activity or exercise, though working/playing on a computer does teach children valuable skills that may be necessary for success in the constantly changing society.

Television on the other hand doesn’t seem to do anything except numb the mind, but computer games and general computer use IMO are far more important in preparing children for the future then people give them credit for.

Yes, kids don’t get physical activity when they are learning on a computer or playing a computer game, but neither do they when studying a textbook or playing with boardgames/toys etc. Just make sure kids get some physical exercise from time to time.

So, turn off the TV? Absolutely.
Turn of the computer? Not a chance, as it will probably be a key tool for future success.
