Yes, they did screw up a lot. They have screwed up everything a lot. Why are they in power? Once might seem an accident. Twice sounds like malice. :)

Malice all right, I voted for Bush and this time had to pass under the inspection of a 400-lb black put there to make sure people vote the right way, well fuck you political police, my state didn't vote for Bush although it was close, but the nation as a whole did. Bush will do until we can get a modern day Henry Ford or Charles Lindburg in the White house.

Give it a rest.

Is there a factory somewhere cranking out idiots on an assembly line?

The only racism that exists in America towards blacks is what they bring upon themselves.

I think the topic of this thread has it right.

You don't see.

You can't see past your own biases.

You blame America for everything. You blame Bush for everything else.

The disaster that is New Orleans began almost three hundred years ago.

Blame it on the French. They picked the landing spot and the building site for the city.

I'm sorry, I guess I forgot: the U.N. is perfect. No, no corruption there. The Canadians? Perfect. The Australians? Perfect. The French? Perfect, perfect, perfect.

I am losing patience. How does the rest of the World see?

Answer: It doesn't.

erl your repetitive isolationism is starting to border on the paranoid...

The fact is that most of us over here are able to distinguish between your government's hopeless foreign policies and the people that make up your country (apart from, it would seem, the original poster), and also the remarkable story of how they all got there. And anyway, let's face it, which modern post-industrial country hasn't got a less than glorious history?

What we just cannot understand over here, though, is how such a powerful and rich country as the US can seem so incapable of helping its own citizens. Maybe it's just a consequence of Big Government (they probably didn't fill the right forms in)? I don't know...

It couldn't happen here (or so we'd like to think), could it - the incompetence I mean, not the flood? (You could of course mention the flood of 31st January 1953 which killed thousands in Britain and Holland - the worst peace time disaster in Europe in the 20th century - but to be honest, they were different times...). I'd like to think it couldn't...

HoveRoyal:

The bulk of your post made eminent sense. Except for that first line.

I have posted on this website 348, oops 349 times. Two or three of those posts advocated a disengagement by the U.S. in response to provocation.

I don't think that is a bad idea. But to describe two out of 349 at "repetitive isolationism" strikes me as a bit exaggerated.

Paranoid? Hmmm. Well, okay. But "repetitive isolationist?"

Go figure.

I think I'll run for Congress.

Oh there's a perfectly good explaination for what went wrong, but it isn't politically correct,so the communists...errr......I mean liberals, will do everything they can to dodge reality.

It's pretty fucking hard to rescue people when they're shooting at you!

Fair enough erl...

But as for that website... hardly a bastion of independent journalism really, and 1 out of 10 for research. It would have helped if the writers had actually taken the trouble to go to New Orleans and saw for themselves what was happening, rather than regurgitating/repackaging old news... But then that's the world-wide web for you...

Now then, as for US isolationism, this is a straight question, what would you say is the appetite in the USA for such a policy? Is it a widely held view? Has opinion recently shifted in that direction since Iraq started to go pear-shaped? Or would you say you're in a minority?

Judging by some of the comments going on on other threads I think I'll have to revise my opening gambit of most of us: let me just say that are still a lot of us who can tell the difference between you and your government! We may be a declining band though...
