Are Black Tupelo / Black Gum fruits edible?

Unread postby lyrl » Wed 24 Aug 2005, 22:37:06

We have a tree in our yard that I have tentatively identified as Black Tupelo / Black Gum. It's bearing an abundance of small black berry-like fruits.

I tried tasting one, and it was sweet. Tasted fairly good, actually. I don't know if it's safe to go around eating random berries, though. The information I found on the internet said they were good ornamental trees, and good for wildlife because many animals eat the berries.
Nothing about whether the fruits were safe for people to eat, though.

Anybody know?
