Washington, DC New Urbanism Takes Off

From the "sometimes you have to read between the lines" department

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '"')We build hundreds of these types of units around the D.C area..." he said. "There are a number of people who believe the trade-offs of higher density and more urban design justify the slight inconvenience of difficulty in maneuvering to have a location so close to Metro," he said.

...skip ahead...

As for Gubernot, she's contemplating giving up a car.

"You should know," she said last week, "I went out and bought a moped."

OK so the article is about the garages being too small, but if you chop out some of it you can totally slant it the other way.

Considering that outside of the National Mall and the rich business district the city is a complete ghetto...rebuilding a walkable community is a great idea. I'm not sure what happens to the current population, but the new-comers who can afford the nicer houses will make the city a better place.

New Urbanism is a form of Gentrification I'm afraid. The poor can't afford these new houses and find themselves in the Projects after losing their slums.

But for now I'm not a member of that class so go ahead and build those pretty little condos! 8)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Tyler_JC', 'r')ebuilding a walkable community is a great idea.

This is not a rebuild and it's not really in Washington, DC. It's a brand new New Urbanist construction and it's in Wheaton, Maryland.

Maryland is preparing for PO without saying "boo" about it. Every Metro stop now has high-density housing near it plus there are other high-density housing areas such as [url=http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=kentlands+lakelands+king-farm&btnG=Google+Search]

Kentlands was on PBS.

Northern Virginia is in much worse shape. Tom Davis opposes New Urbanism because he's republican and democrats want to live in the New Urbanist places.

Rep. Davis's Bill Called a Threat

By Lisa Rein
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, July 28, 2005; Page A10

Fairfax County Board Chairman Gerald E. Connolly yesterday accused Rep. Thomas M. Davis III of a "raw exercise of power" in pushing federal legislation that would block a development at the Vienna Metro station -- and said the congressman is threatening the independence of local governments across the region.
