Mobs: Another reason to fear society

Unread postby frankthetank » Tue 16 Aug 2005, 18:56:38

There is no hope

For a 4 year old $50 ibook(a good deal yes...but)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')fficials opened the gates at 7 a.m., but some already had been waiting since 1:30 a.m. When the gates opened, it became a terrifying mob scene.

People threw themselves forward, screaming and pushing each other. A little girl’s stroller was crushed in the stampede. Witnesses said an elderly man was thrown to the pavement, and someone in a car tried to drive his way through the crowd.

Seventeen people suffered minor injuries, with four requiring hospital treatment, Henrico County Battalion Chief Steve Wood said. There were no arrests and the iBooks sold out by 1 p.m.

What would happen if instead of ibooks they were selling...the last bags of rice they had in stock or last case of mac and cheese?

PO is going to become violent i fear.

Keep your mind empty and your piece loaded, and stay away from big crowds.

I assume early on violent people will clash with other violent people. They seem to attract each other. Let them do each other in.

I'll eat the bark off my trees before I'm in a food riot fighting over a bag of rice (of course I say that just after finishing a nice lunch).

Pfft the natives will sell their souls for trinkets and beads, and they will die and kill each other over things that don't even come remoltely close to life or death matters.

Good advice!

Really the west has been the land of plenty for so long I think socially we would not cope well with shortages. Our supply of short tempers and guns makes me wonder just how crazy post peak realization will be ... wild west P2.

This is a good argument for stockpiling some food. You may not want to go near the places it is sold or distributed for a few months.

I hate to say it, because it doesn't sound particularly pleasing but...

We might have to get used to cannabalizing each other to survive. When all the food runs out, they'll be plenty of people! I heard scientists are actually trying to grow meat from test tubes, so who knows maybe we will be ok for a little longer.

Considering the U.S. is the world's most obese nation, there won't be a shortage of "food" any time soon. Anyone want the leg?

This has been done before, such as the civilization from Easter Island, so I'm not just floating this. As they say, history repeats itself.

those used iBooks are good for $500 apiece on Ebay, so, for $50 you get more disposable income you have most months, yeah, the proles will fight.

WTF were they thinking selling iBooks for $50?

If people are lining up for blocks to buy your product, raise the price!

Sane pricing policy would have prevent this incident.

I blame the store owner's poor understanding of the laws of supply and demand.

Most probably a marketing ploy.

What kind of marketing ploy involves 17 injured people?

I wouldn't go back to the store after something like that.

Unless, of course, they had a $27 iPod sale! :)

I remember a while back seeing a refugee camp in Africa where there were obviously thousands of starving people. What struck me was the dignity in which they waited for food, many only hours away from death.

I suspect many in the West would not behave as well. We're too used to everything being done for us.

I made the mistake of going to a sale like this once. One minute you had relatively normal calm people laughing and joking. The next, a bunch of wild animals!

Consumerism at its best...http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/08/16/computer.frenzy.ap/index.html :(

I attended a football match in Holland last year. After the match, 500 cheap, plastic, 1-euro-a-piece, orange footballs were thrown in the crowd. It was really embarrasing to see adults falling and fighting over and with each other just to grab one of these balls

And we all know that school systems (AKA Government welfare systems) don't have a clue of how supply/demand works. :-D :-D :-D

I use to work for a university.

The message is simple. If stores start running out of food, you'd better have more then a couple cans of spam on hand.
