Just a few thoughts

Unread postby cheaplaughs » Tue 16 Aug 2005, 12:40:45

If i hear another major media outlet compare the price of gas
to the price of coffee or nasal spray or pop tarts or whatever
useless thing we buy I might just puke because if coffee for
example hits 10$ a cup we will stop buying it.Gas on the other
hand we will keep buying not just because we want to but because
we have too. This leads me too another pet peeve it seems to me
that when the word commute is brought up it always involves
an investment banker or a 3 car family getting into town for
there $120.000 a year job.The truth is so many of the people
out there on the roads everyday are single moms and dads
just trying too put roofs over there heads and food on the table
for there kids at $40.000 a year.I would guess most of them
would like to work close to home but the jobs simply are not
there it is not just the suburbs that people commute to and
from it is also the small towns and communities that are 50
miles from the jobs. The people that live there didnt all choose
to move there they were born and raised there and could not
afford too move closer too work even if they wanted too so they
will one day maybe 'today' drive buy the coffee shops and
convenience stores and not stop but when the needle says
empty just like the fridge they will stop not because they want too
but because they have to.

Thought 2
Has anyone ever considered raising the the driving age from 16 to say
21 i know we could make loop holes for work and special needs but
it seems to me most kids this age dont work for example anything
i have dellivered including fast food is not buy kids saving for school
but buy adults saving for rent.We might save a bit on energy a bit
on insurance and yes a lot of lives.

Thought 3
When will we let all those millions of people who drive everyday to work
only too sit at computer screen be allowed to work from home it
seems to me we would get a lot of cars off the road or did we just
invent the internet to bitch about high gas prices, map quest, and have
things dellivered and i almost forgot watch non tallented hollywood
types get laid online to save there earth moving carrears.

Here's one more thought: without punctuation, English is practically illegible.

Hello cheap laughs, Your all right and have a good chance Post PO judging by your very common sense approach.

I agree getting kids off the road and in the fields working picking fruit and vegtables(like they used to before PC police took control post ww2) is an excclent idea for conserving oil and lessening the impact. Make them work and displace the illegal immigrants who breed 5 on AVERAGE.

also using wi fi and broad band for working and communicating should also be happening now.

But the only thing we can do is keep pushing for common sense and intelligent solutions.

our solutions by the kings and serfs so far have brought endless complexity. Keeping up statis quo will surely lead to a greenland/norse type blowout.
but with people like u there is still a chance of pulling something of value out of this mess.
english majors will be grill material post PO. :-D

You know, cheaplaughs, you are exactly right.

We have discussed this several times. For the bottom 60% of the wage earners, the current situation is already comparable to if not worse than 1982. You never hear about the fact that these people have not kept up with inflation.

At some point, these people will not be able to do it anymore, and quit spending money. At that point, the system will have to change.

There are still plenty of jobs out there that don't require people
to drive everyday ie. secretaries, paralegals, just about any office
worker. You may still have to drive in once a week but that is probably
a good thing as this would make it impossible for these jobs to go
to India.I think if I am not wrong Matt Simmons has suggested this
in his book as possible help to our current problem.

Hell if a ceo at a major financial corporation doesn't need to be
in his office why should the majority of his work force be there
when they can do the same thing's from home.
I might be dead wrong . I am just trying to throw some idea's out
there.

I have one (short term) worry about telecommuting. More people will start to telecommute but I see the majority being those that complain to the boss about the cost for them to drive to work. Those that live in suburbia in the middle of nowhere will telecommute and people like myself that live closer will be deemed "onsite".... further supporting the stupid notion of living in the middle of gawd damn nowhere and working in the city.

If everyone starts to telecommute, who will be stopping at the local gas- and-go shop for their large pepsi/coffe and donut/muffin to enjoy on the way to the office? What will happen to all the Subways/Quiznos/Grocery store salad bars at lunch time when their lunch-time traffic drops xx%?

Initially it sounds like a good idea, and for some it would be, but the current system is too entrenched to survive radical change without major unforeseen side-effects.

And besides, Americans will just get fatter. When they all start telecommuting, they won't even need to walk to the car and from the car to their office anymore. Just stay at home in front of the keyboard stuffing your face full of cheese doodles and downing pepsi.

This kind of solution will help offset middle class fuel consumption, but it would put a lot of people on the next lower level out of work that depend on the normal traffic pattern of daily commuters in the suburban landscape of America.

I'm not sure I would classify the initial post as the work of a 'lazy' writer. After all, it was at least 3 paragraphs long, each expressing a different thought. At least more thought went into it than the standard 1 or 2 line 'you must be crazy' post/response.

This is not some upscale yuppy version of 'Salon'. In case you haven't noticed, people from all walks of life are here because they are interested in this issue we call 'Peak Oil'. And besides, I don't recall seeing you blast 'Phebagirl' for her lack of proper formatting and punctuation.

I think the tone you displayed will only discourage the many 'Guests' and 'lurkers' that we have visiting here from posting for fear of having their use or misuse of the language corrected or criticised. Aren't there more pressing issues to worry about at the moment?

Peace...

I agree, pulling teens off of the roads would greatly reduce the automobile casualty rate, and without a job, most teens have little reason to own a car. (at least that was my excuse then). But, I would like to see it made possible to be a telecomuting custodian. The last time I checked, my computer couldn't clean up after incompitent geezers who spill liquid they touch and shit themselves. And why do 2 people need 3 cars? You can only drive one at a time. Just get a 3/4 ton dual cab truck with a canopy. That could do everything you could possibly want a vehicle to do. Unless you are counting families with a driving teen, then they should buy thier own car, pay for thier own gas, and pay for thier own insurance. I did it, it really isn't too tough if you don't have any other bills. I used to do it on 15 hours per week, and still have $300 a month to blow on stereo equipment at the time. (Strangly enough, my stereo has outlived 3 cars now. Kind of shows where I used to put my money. {Hell, I can't see out my rearview mirror if I crank up my stereo with my amps on. [I can make AM radio thump!]})

Yes, if I decide to turn my amps on. I usually listen to talk radio, so I don't really turn them on anymore. The last time I did I was sitting in construction, and the guy behind me was thumping, so I decided it was time for a little stereo showdown. I think I won, (or I had better music), he turned his off after a couple minutes when I just kept on turning it up. I had my deck on at 25, I can go all the way to 60 if I wanted to. (but I would probably fry my deck because of the draw on it. It's already bad enough on 25 that my dash lights dim when I hit anything below 50Hz.

Along with my eardrums going *pop* whenever the Metallica riff plays, or he yells. I have thought about it with the CD [i]So So Def Bass: Volume #2[i] though. But I would have to roll down my windows first before I did that. I'd probably get a ticket for "disturbing the peace" though. Noise ordinances are in effect in Pullman between 2200-0800. If I recall, anything over 75db 10 feet away is a mandantory $90 fine. Considering I work from 0600-1430, the only time I could get away with it is on my way home, (when I had the stereo sound off with that guy in construction).
