Yesterday, 2 coworkers of mine were discussing the gas prices situation.
One guy asked "How high does it have to go before the government does something, you know?"
I didnt say anything, stayed completely out of it. But I was thinking "What do you WANT them do to?"
They discuss it a bit more, then the guy leaves and drives home in his...Yep, you guessed it...Expedition.

Tonight while out smoking I hear a guy talking to a lady about cars. He's saving up to buy the Chrysler Charger SRT. Yes, the big monster 400+ HP V8 model.

People just dont have a clue at all. :(

I hear you Spec. I can't talk to people about it anymore. I don't know when to stop once I start. I suppose that is the reason why most of my post on this forum anymore are just jokes or oneliners.

People have become so conditioned to the good life that any alternative is inconceivable. They don't, won't and can't see that things are going to have to change drastically for a myriad of reasons. Some poster said recently that they reckoned we'ld still be accelerating as we went off the abyss and I am fully in agreement with this.

So we might as well all have a good laugh today because tomorrow we'll all be crying.

What creeps me out the most is that so many people just expect or assume "the government will take care of it." Why are people so in love with the government? Are they children who need Daddy to take care of them? 8O

You have my assurance that I do NOT drive a truck.

Besides, my car's engine is a mere 275 HP V8. 8)

The people say they want the government to do something because they don't have the courage to do something themselves. The government won't do anything because they don't want to be the bearers of bad news, they want to get re-elected. Democracy is is about "don't worry, be happy and re-elect me". So ultimately nobody does anything, and the oil keeps being burned up faster than we can afford. And when people say they want the government to do something, they certainly don't mean mandatory conservation, smaller vehicles, less frivilous travel, higher gas consumption taxes, etc. That's why in the US we subsidize cars and airplanes far more than buses and trains.

Madpaddy,

That's exactly how I feel. Sometimes when people are talking complete rubbish I just have to walk away. I just can't be bothered to try to explain everything. It takes forever and at the end of it they just say "Yer, but why doesn't the government do something? " - I could scream but I've learnt to keep quiet (sometimes).

They'll all find out soon enough, probably the hard way, but they still wont understand and will just blame the Arabs, Oil companies etc.

Keep smiling :-D

Maybe the government can come in and put a cap on wholesale prices like they are doing in Hawaii.

Their idea to cap wholesale gas prices without capping retail prices has to be one of the worst ideas I have heard of to "solve" higher prices. The legislators obviously have been smoking to much pakalolo.

What did the government do during the seventies? 55 speed limit that would be a start. And man that would suck for driving long distances.

It's funny but it's not ;)

It's truly amazing how unaware people are in general of not only oil but the world around them. At a family BBQ last weekend that revelation hit me like a ton of bricks.

The average person really has no idea of what is going on in the world if it doesn't appear on CNN, local news or local daily paper.

For the most part I remain silent about PO or other global economic issues when attending parties now. The odd time I attempted to discuss it I just got some strange looks, no comments and then the conversation changed abruptly to baseball !!! LOL

It is amazing how ordinary folk are just not connecting the dots.

Trying to introduce PO to the topic of conversation is like blasphemy. Like you I have given up, they'll be 'introduced' to it soon enough!

Just to give the average people some credit.

They do not think about PO because it is above their pay grade. Problems like Po are exactly why we have governments to help organize society. Once three dollar gas gets here they will wake up more. And once people wake up the government will be forced to act.

But most people are too busy living there lives to worry about such a big problem as Po.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('NeoPeasant', 'T')he sad fact is 9 out of 10 will require the Kunstlerian Bitch-Slap, and it's gotta hurt bad.

I use about 30 gallons of gasoline a month. At $16/gallon it would cost me $500/month and I could eat that cost although it wouldn't break me. Of course everything else would cost more and there would be riots and stuff.

So at $8/gallon would it would be $250/month for me which seems so much more do-able.

What $3 - $4/gallon will do is rape the poor and make the rich go shopping as usual.

I'm disappointed that you guys have decided not to engage others. It's your duty to do so.

You don't need to convince anyone, just plant some seeds.
Now why didn't I take the blue pill.

You've made a mistake somewhere peanut - you mean you use 30 gallons a month I suspect, or else you can afford to spend $500 per week on gas in which case you are buying me dinner tonite.
