I snagged my wedding ring finger on a fence yesterday...

Unread postby MagnoliaFan » Tue 02 Aug 2005, 01:56:04

I was on my way home (walking) and cut across a parking lot, until I stumbled upon a chain link fence. I would have had to backtrack 5 minutes in order to get to the sidewalk but decided to jump the fence instead. From what I could see, the fence has been climbed over by others since it was slightly bent.

As I climbed over and started to climb down, I arrived at the point where I only needed to jump 2 feet down. Unbeknownst to me, my wedding ring finger was snagged on a loose section of the fence, as I came down, my wedding ring had to find a way off of my finger, so it ripped off several layers of skin. By all reasoning, my finger should have broke off but thankfully it did not.

Even though I had to wait 3 hours at the hospital in the minor injuries section of the hospital, I was grateful that 1) I did not lose my finger and 2) Society was still stable enough so that I could get properly bandaged and x-rayed. The Canadian health care system is limited in its scope and is rationned, but it's better than nothing. In the post-peak world, I would be SOL.

My wedding ring is gone forever, but the little woman at home has been patient and understanding.

I don't want to go on a rant here, but I don't understand the concept of fencing in parking lots or making certain sections of cities unwalkable.

Apparently a lot of people have lost their wedding fingers this way. I was lucky not to lose my finger clean off.

A clear sign that you should not wear a ring! Don't misinterpret this for not being married though. The way things happen is just unreal sometimes, isn't it? And yes, we are still pre-PO. (Don't always go into post PO scenarios or have you seen the future already)?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'I') used to ski. I know some surfers now. That entire extreme sports crowd is white, probably relatively wealthy. You have to have really good medical coverage to continue that stuff past adolescence. Most poor people don't have it.

Funny--as I was waiting in the hospital, a 14-year old kid arrived with a broken arm he suffered while skateboarding.

Apparently, the reason why it was so slow to get my problem attended to was that several people arrived ahead of me with severe cuts to their hands or fingers. One of the nurses said that these things happen in spurts--one day a slew of people will arrive with broken hands, the next day it will be a bunch of people who got hot water burns. Very Lovecraftian...

My mom and a former roommate of mine were both at one time Registered Nurses in an Emergency Room. They both said that "incidents" ALWAYS were more frequent around a full moon. Almost as if people were "different" around that time. Hmm, how could that be in this capitalist, mechanical Universe we live in?

I'm going to have to start wearing one of those things soon, though I will definitely be taking it off at work (too much lifting and dropping). Maybe I should get a breakaway model. :-D

My grandfather lost his finger. Jumped off a grain truck. Ring got caught on the way down.
No more finger.

I've looked for the ring twice--the first time immediately after my injury, and after I came back from the hospital. I can only assume that the ring was catapulted from the fence several hundred meters away because for the life of me, I can't find it.

I have a friend who was going into a store where he works. His wedding ring caught on the door and his whole finger was degloved. Ripped everything off right down to the bone. He did lose his finger.

You should consider yourself very lucky! I have a friend who was once a cop and he never wore his wedding ring on duty, for exactly this reason. If you're chasing a perp and they jump a fence, you can easily lose your finger going after them. He had a friend in his office who was missing his ring finger for exactly this reason.

Before we got in the Brads (Rolling Barns) it was advised that all wedding rings be removed. Armor eats fingers.

I've been lucky, but I'm quite likely to remove my ring. I saw pictures of a guy's hand where he was working on a car, and a tool made contact with the battery and his ring at the same time. It worked like an arc welder by severely burning his skin around the finger. The photos served as quite a warning. My wife knows not to worry when I'm not wearing the ring.

It might be worth your while to rent/borrow a metal detector to assist your search.

I never wore a ring while working in my trade, nor a metal watch band for the reason stated by Browndog.

I still do neither for no particular reason.
