It looks like the Government aren't going to back down on the tax rises this time:
Petrol prices to reach record high:

Triple whammy of tax rises on petrol will make unleaded over £1 a litre:
http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/arti ... article.do

Up here in Perthshire, Scotland we already pay £1 a litre (1 US gallon = 3.7854118 litres) and have no trains and a pathetic bus service - we are all dreading this latest round of price rises! :(

I live in Scotland because I'm Scottish, I like it and I have a good job here. :-)
I also have enough land to grow a fair amount of our vegetables and keep hens. We live within a few hundreds yards of the National Cycle Route and that allows me to keep fit without risking life and limb! On our over-populated island it is nice to live somewhere where there are less than 1000 people in hundreds of square miles.

I think many people have a very old fashioned (i.e. pre climate change) idea about our weather. I grow corn, tomatoes, chillis as well as all the usual potatoes, peas etc. Last winter we had ONE day of snow and a few frosty/icy mornings but I never had to cancel my morning cycle even once. I grow salads all year in the polytunnel and have leeks, kale, kohl rabi and other stuff nearly ready for fresh winter meals.

It's not too bad here :-)

>what about heating,it still gets cold even without snow

We bought a south facing house so we need no heating at all from April to September. It had no central heating at all when we moved in so it allowed us to choose the best option right from the start.
October to March can get chilly, no argument there. I installed a wood burning stove and it is good enough to heat the entire house, it also boils the kettle and can cook our food in emergencies. In addition to locally bought logs we get some coal delivered and I collect fallen wood from the local forest while I am out cycling.
Next year I am planning on installing a small micro-turbine and some solar panels to provide us with enough electricity for lighting and small electrical items like a laptop.

I've still got a lot to do but as I work full-time there are only so many hours in the day.
All the best,
Fergie

Good work Fergie.
Sadly so many are unwilling and for the most part unable to do what you are doing.

I used to live in Orkney like 10 years ago....Sanday, Mainland and Rousay...I knew back then that TSHTF at some stage and tried to go self sufficient...then love intervened and I lost the plot.....lol. Anyways, moved back to old New Zealand and am glad I did so...wouldn't fancy being north of the equator when things go flip flop.

It routinely gets to -20 F (-29C) up here in the winter and it isn't that bad.

Some was to cope....

1. break out grandma's recipes. The ones that begin with "Melt three cups of lard"

2. Cut wood for the next heating season. -20 doesn't feel that bad when you are burning of the calories from grandma's recipes.

3. Population is not near as dense up here and there is a lot more wood. my 10 acre woodlot can be harvested sustainably. With a good south facing house (if the sun is out we do not need to run teh wood stove on -20 mornings) and a good wood stove things are quite cozy.

4. Down comforters for everyone in the house and let the temp drop at night.

5. Farm animals built for the cold. The chickens, goats and rabbits I have just need a place out of the wind. The rabbits will sit exposed in a snow storm and love it. The chickens stay in the coop (I they they are afraid of snow) most of the time but still venture out to eat the feed wasted by the rabbits. And the goat lounge in teh sun eating bark and hay.

I frankly don't know what all the fuss is about.

I couldn't agree more!! Well said!

Since when was a wee bit cold such an issue?

It's not as if it is even cold enough to kill winter veg let alone kill people who are prepared.
Now the long dark winter nights - that's not so nice!
