Here's the database itself:

It asks for a username and password. According to the help file, there should be a register link. It says, "If there is no Register link, you will have to ask your WDS site administrator to create an account for you." For now, it looks like it won't be accessible.

I don't know whether this database is a major step in data reform, or whether it doesn't really add anything new. For the database to be meaningful, there would have to be field-by-field data, but it's not apparent what is included. Currently, Saudi Arabia can easily continue to claim that it has 260 billion barrels or more of proven reserves while dodging Simmons' concerns.

According to an article on oildrum, which is is itself referring to Platts, the database will be launched this weekend, maybe it will then be possible to register...
