As the legislative history of the 2005 energy bill shows, recent Congresses simply have not had the chemistry to make the kind of tough decisions that will be needed to deal with peak oil. Some type of “Energy Crisis Board” with extraordinary powers (like the War Production Board of World War II) will have to be set up. Congress will have to delegate to this Board, control over many aspects of our economy as they relate to the production, distribution, and consumption of energy.

It its simplest form, the new bill would give the new Energy Crisis Board the mandate and authority to do what it takes to solve the peak oil crisis, much the same way the Federal Reserve Board manages the money supply.

History shows that the US does not act without a "Pearl Harbor". I don't expect much intervention until after the economy has collapsed.

If Congress did what needed to be done TSWHTf.

Congress is reactive not proactive they are to worried about "keeping there phony balony jobs". They have to wait until TSHTF.

Isn't this what is expected, though? As energy input to society decreases, standard of living falls.

Actually if you want to see where we could be as we regress down the "energy ladder", see this:

Interestingly enough, the USA could be using half (half!) the energy per capita and have a Japanese/E.U. standard of living if they'd get their heads out of their asses and stop worshipping their cars.

This chart actually makes me somewhat hopeful, in that something like 60 - 65% of energy could be eliminated from Canada/USA before we start getting to Korean or Brazilian standards of living. That's a lot of years of oil depletion. The question is whether the planning to make that transition possible will happen.

I have always thought outdoor light just helped the criminals. I know my place better than anyone so I have the advantage in the dark. The best way to make any intruder think twice is a large dog. :twisted:

Anybody who thinks that criminals are deterred by lights is a fool. On the other hand, lights and cameras in combination can be quite effective in identification.

If nobody had outdoor lighting except you, it would probably be an effective deterrant. Likewise, if everyone else had it and you didn't, you'd probably be at greater risk. However, I'm not sure that everybody having it is any different than nobody having it.

You can be sure that the US government will stage a "Pearl Harbour" in the near future, but not to fascilitate a PO solution, rather to instigate the neo-con fascist plan of conquering the American people and setting up a feudal society for the post PO.
