I was watching the auto execs testify today. If we want to stimulate the economy, we really should throw them the cash -- it's peanuts in comparison to trillion dollar stimuli. They had an independant economist testify that bailing out the auto would actually be good for stimulating the economy, twice as effective as same money sent out in rebate checks.

Maybe we're being too short sighted here. As long as foreigners want to keep buying our T-Bills, maybe we should spend as much as we possibly can. Lets spend a couple trillion on infrastructure. That way, once we finally do default on all our debts, at least we'll have lots of neat stuff that can't be repossessed.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'a') couple trillion on infrastructure

I agree, let's take on debt as long as they'll buy. We could actually afford more debt -- we're nowhere near WWII levels of debt vs. GDP.

The key though is that it should be in real things, infrastructure. Not just thrown at banks. I heard another economist say that it really doesn't take a war to stimulate and economy -- the economy doesn't care if it's bullets or infrastructure.

Yeah, this thread needs to be tied into what China is doing with the Yaun, they are telling the US to go pound sand.

Hank went over there asking them to raise the value of the Yaun instead they lowered it.

This is a doomsday scenario for the US.

Why do they insist on calling this a "stimulus" and "monetary expansion"? Its not going to be financed with borrowed money from the Chinese, the Chinese don't HAVE that much money to lend every year from now until the end of time. Why can't they just say, "We need a Trillion Dollars of Monopoly Money every year from now until the Universe Collapses."?

I simply can't believe that the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg can print this stuff and it all gets discussed like it might work on CNN. WTF? Who's passing out the Kool Aid? I want some!

The rebate checks were just a head fake to keep the taxpayers off balance while the banks dashed away with bazillions.

There is almost zero genuine thought going on in Washington about what to do about the economy. There's no plan. It's just looting. A feeding frenzy on the carcass of a busted Republic.

Their leaders talked and talked and talked, but nothing could stem the avalanche.

Yeah. That sounds about right. In this version of the breadlines only the uberwealthy get to participate and the handouts are in the billions. By the time the rest of us realize what's happened, there won't be anything left.

These will be printed money.

There is not much to worry about it being wasted.

Government will print further trillion (or quadrillion...), should need arisen.
Better get used to the idea that money won't buy you much in rather short term future.

Robert Reich

"I am concerned, as I’m sure many of you are, that these jobs not simply go to high-skilled people who are already professionals or to white male construction workers. … I have nothing against white male construction workers. I’m just saying that there are a lot of other people who have needs as well. … Criteria can be set so that the money does go to others, the long term unemployed minorities, women, people who are not necessarily construction workers or high-skilled professionals."

Now just substitute Black for White........................imagine the fire storm.

You are going see a lot more of this shit. More minority set aside work, MBE requirements, scholarships based on skin color etc. etc.

A post racial society? No. Obama is officially the nation’s first exclusively racial President.

The Economic Stimulus Explained

Unread postby bratticus » Fri 30 Jan 2009, 13:46:56

I found this on an LJ community:

This year, taxpayers will receive an Economic Stimulus Payment. Here is a brief explanation:

Q. What is an Economic Stimulus Payment?
A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.

Q. Where will the government get this money?
A. From taxpayers.

Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?
A. Only part of it.

Q. What is the purpose of this payment?
A. The plan is that you will use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.

Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China ?
A. Shut up.

Haha.. don't forget though... the source of the money is not your tax dollars but rather from the Chinese buying up more of our debt.

Can you actually see us ever paying all this debt back? I mean do you see an economic boom coming with hundreds of billions in surpluses coming in ? Even if you eliminate interest entirely 10 trillion in debt would take 50 years to pay off if we had 200 billion dollar surpluses year after year after year.
