PeakSpeak

Unread postby Tyler_JC » Wed 18 May 2005, 21:38:03

I have just realized something...

I am the catalyst for PeakSpeak. I rarely go on the site and see people in PeakSpeak chatting it up about PO or whatever they feel like talking about. I rarely see anyone take the plunge and sign on to PeakSpeak (gasp) alone. Now there are people on this site for hours and hours each day (you know who you are  ). Clearly it's possible for PeakSpeak to be filled at all times thanks to the fact that this is an international forum.

However, it's usually just Jato, NevadaGhosts, and I. Maybe a few others jump on now and then, but it's usually rather empty and unused. I'm usually the one to sign on first and send out the "OK" signal for others to join me. So here's my question, why?

There are roughly 5000 members on peakoil.com (complete guess). There are many people with over 500 posts. I consider 500 posts a rather substantial investment of time (and energy :) ) into this topic. If all of the people with over 500 posts went on PeakSpeak every now and then, we could have a real conversation. It seems like people are afraid of real time conversation...

And I ask it again, why? Why is everyone afraid to use PeakSpeak? It's not that difficult to figure out and can be quite entertaining (certainly more entertaining than staring at a computer screen and reading text for 45 minutes). I suggest that everyone try out PeakSpeak if they can. If you hate it, it's free. If you like it, great, I have another person to talk to.

I would but my super duper gaming soundcard with 7.1 surround (or whatever it happens to be) doesn't allow for a mic and I'm too lazy to figure out how to make the onboard soundcard work with the soundblaster.
You observed it from the start
Now you’re a million miles apart
As we bleed another nation
So you can watch you favorite station
Now you eyes pop out your sockets
Dirty hands and empty pockets
Who? You!

If your onboard sound card is activated..

Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Multimedia -> go to "Audio" menu -> Watch for "Sound Recording" and select your "prefered device"

If your onboard sound card is not activated (well, could be because could make "funny" thing to happen) and you're soooo lazy isnt ?..go to the Radioscrap or China-Mart near you and buy a USB microphone and do the same than at the top..

Imagine my surprise one day when I just happened to notice this list of people using Peak Speak ……….

"Lobby"
"Dan"
"Tyler_JC"
"Meoxis"
"nevadaghosts"
"Guest1"
"jato"
"acupncher"
"SOSaD"
"BiGG"

………….. the interesting part here being I have never even downloaded the software! I notified a moderator and haven’t seen my name since, but somebody registered using the name I use on the boards! I never did find out who it was nor actually care, but others may want to pay attention and see if some pathetic clown is using their names also.

You can register your name so that no one can use it without a password. I was on there one day and found a Smallpoxguy. That was weird.

I have never really understood why PeakSpeak is underutilized myself.

I mean... the most important topic of the century... a growing community of informed members... & a free international voice conference application seemed a perfect match to me.

Go figure...

My hypothesis is that it is probably a personality thing. People that are drawn to message boards, I would speculate are more into the written word and less into talking. The people that would be most interested in having a conference call, probably never find their way to the message board.

I get on if I see at least 3 people in it. I have no mic so if there is noone talking it isn't worth it to go.

Thanks Aaron, but I know. I've installed that build already, and tried. That was a month ago. Lemme attempt this again (not here - 2-way firewalls all over! ARGH) and detail the problems involved.

I think there would be a lot of noise coming from around me into my mic. I have a loud cat that can be very demanding and twin 8 year old girls practising to be 13 yr. olds on the phone.
