THE Hummer / SUV Thread pt 2 (merged)

Postby Fruitcake » Fri 21 May 2004, 10:26:00

Evworld has an article about the Hummer 2 and concludes it is about half as energy effective as an Ford Model T.
Let's hope that all the technology the optimists are talking about is at least as old as a model T.

God obviously must drive an SUV....

Postby jdmartin » Sun 14 Aug 2005, 00:29:36

This, in part, from the NY Times, regarding the rising fuel prices:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')ome people are seeing opportunities in the price spiral to help others. Members of the Gateway Pentecostal Fellowship in Cranston, R.I., raised $1,000 last month to subsidize the price of gasoline at a service station to help working-class residents. The church's members pumped 2,000 gallons, trimmed by a 50-cent-a-gallon subsidy, down to $1.89.
The Gateway pastor, Russell Farmer explained, "We just wanted to be there as representatives of the Lord and show that he cares about everyday problems."

Well, isn't that special?

Actually I have seen this in my own community, somewhere back in May or so when the prices really started taking off again. I stopped at this convenience store for something and there was a line of cars that went all the way down the street. It was the Church of Somebody knocking 20 cents or so off of everyone's gas for an hour. I asked one of the church pumpers about it and was told (to paraphrase) "This was God speaking to us on a church level to get out in the trenches to help his children". Interestingly enough, many of the cars in the line were Mercedes, BMW's, et al. I think I only saw 1 or 2 junkers. Everyone else was driving at least a $30k vehicle (many SUV's).

And to imagine some people think that if it gets really bad everyone will just take it in stride

After fueling up their cars, Twyman says they bowed their heads and asked God for cheaper gas. There was no immediate answer, but he says other motorists joined in and the service station owner didn't run them off.

I noticed on the left the Holy Mud Company products page. I don't know
which I want the most -- Dead Sea Mud Mask at $26 or the
illiminated crucifix.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jdmartin', 'I')nterestingly enough, many of the cars in the line were Mercedes, BMW's, et al. I think I only saw 1 or 2 junkers. Everyone else was driving at least a $30k vehicle (many SUV's).

If they hadn't overspent and also bought guzzlers they'd be able to still afford gas.

Even Texans are trading in their SUVs for Corollas

Postby Leanan » Wed 28 Sep 2005, 16:26:43

From the Washington Post: Smaller Cars Enjoy New Chic
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'J')ohn Mathews of Universal Toyota in San Antonio has witnessed the day that auto industry executives in Detroit said would never come.
"We are seeing people who are driving $40,000 Suburbans trading them in on $15,000 Corollas," said Mathews, who manages a dealership in a state where big trucks and sport-utility vehicles rule the roads. "The last 30 days have been unlike anything I've ever seen in the automotive industry."

Honda and Toyota can't keep Civics and Corollas in stock. Meanwhile, American car companies sink beneath the weight of their SUVs. Demand destruction in action...

Too many suburbans, hummers, and excursions in Dallas. Mostly Folks with "Big Hats and No Cattle" syndrome.

I switched from a ford truck to a Honda Accord 6yrs ago which in my opinion is the swiss army knife of vehicles. I can load up my wife and 2 kids, haul a christmas tree on my Yakima kayak rack, and still get 30mpg.
If you give a man a fish you will have kept him from hunger for a day. If you teach a man to fish he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

This article reports that "demand destruction" is happening faster than many thought possible:

http://www.usatoday.com/money/industrie ... usat_x.htm

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'D')ouglass says gasoline demand in his area has dropped 10% below last year's, starting in August. It's "a huge change" that he previously thought would take years.

Maybe we will have a "long plateau" after all...

Flanders wages war against SUVs

Postby lorenzo » Thu 22 Dec 2005, 18:10:56

1. The Flemish government has just brought justice to SUV owners. They used to write their SUV off as a "light truck", knowing that for "light trucks" there are tax breaks.
Now the government has issued a decree which says that SUVs are ordinary cars. The extra income for the government is estimated at a yearly $5 million (not much, but we're a micro-state).
link Rumor has it that we're also going to penalise inefficient gas-guzzling cars in general (with an extra tax).

2. SUVs were banned from many Flemish city centres recently, because most accidents in city centres in which pedestrians are involved happen to happen with SUVs. (There's a sociological correlation between aggressive driving and SUV ownership). Of course, they're also banned because they pollute the urban air.

3. Finally, in cities where they haven't been banned yet, there are anti-SUV-terrorists operating, deflating all SUV-tires around. This is a pan-European deflaters organisation, operating in France and the Netherlands too. (A recent poll shows that ordinary people like this kind of terrorism). The police doesn't intervene, which is good.

So how's the war against the SUV going in the US and elsewhere?
