It's fairly well known that in a lot of cases factory workers in the US are not allowed sufficient time to use the bathroom. They wear Depends. You think there are really enough incontinent 80-year-olds to around to buy all those Depends you see in the store? Michael Moore, yeah he's a fat slob liberal ratbastard, but he's even talked about this stuff, you have workers in the US working and take a bathroom break = lose your job. So, the Depends. Subtle Butt sounds like another solution to this problem, yes, the Empire is the worker's paradise!

Threadbear, that's priceless... :-D

At least if TSHTF, it won't smell so bad....

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')I can't say enough positive about hoarding sanitary pads. Why, other than the more traditional use, they make decent insoles for shoes, neck warmers in the winter, not to mention comfortable lounging furniture for hamsters. I think you're on to something! Laughing

Just looking out for me is different to looking out for my family. Thinking about what my wife and kids will need has a rather concise list. The issue of sanitation pads is a touchy one. Ask the ladies around you now if they would be prepared to go without and for how long (first step out of striking distance)? They are relatively inexpensive and light weight. Come in sealed plastic bags. This is a necessity and also an easy win.

I went down to the supermarket and pulled all of the brands out to have a look at them (my wife was in Canberra at the time). The shop assistants thought I was crazy!!! One old lady came up to me and demanded why I was not embarrassed like a normal man should be (complete with waving of walking stick). I told her I was looking for water absorbent insulation to pack into the bathroom walls. :)

She didn't believe me but thought it best to leave me be!

*sigh*

Here's what I think (and i stress the word THINK...I'm not positive of anything).

As stock markets crash, so will the price of gold/silver (we've already seen this to a small extent).

But at that point you will not be able to buy physical gold or silver for that price. Have food & cash on hand to get thru that period while being able to keep your metals.

Even have extra food that you can trade some poor slob for his gold.

THEN gold & silver will head skywards...and KA-CHING!!!

just my opinion...

I think it's still inflation right now. The price of silver has gone up a dollar since last week. Of course, we could have some selling and profit taking bring it down soon. I don't know if it's hit a peak yet, though. I saw on another site that somebody had reconstructed the M-1 money supply and it was over 18% more this year. That could mean inflation is still working its way through the economy.

It does seem like it's a battle between deflation and inflation. The value of big assets like houses is going down and the value of the little things we buy every day is going up. It seems like people are selling the big things to buy little things.

How about storing some Chinese money as well. Chinese currency is undervalued as it is. Maybe the yuan will rise in value as the American dollar loses it.

Is anyone betting on the yuan ? :)

I think i'd rather have northern quilted :)

Seriously, If the US$ goes down the toilet...I really believe ALL paper currincies, globally, will go the same way.

It's all based on faith & people will no longer have faith in a fiat currency.

This is a world wide crash. Then it gets much worse. Pull yourself together, get off the grid, get out of the cities now before it is too late. Or just join the lemmings and go running for the cliff. There will be no revival of paper currency, not even gold based. You can get some silver or gold coins. Simple living and high thinking.

But like most people I am a city dweller living in a apartment. If you have no land you cannot grow anything, except for maybe a few plants that will not sustain you, and this will most likely make you a target when times get tough.
So I have to concentrate on investments to protect me, so that if TSHTF before I have enough bling to buy land, then I can make sure that I am not totally screwed.

I like pre-64 silver. It's fun to find out about all the coins that were issued and can be bought for close to the silver value. Coins like the walking liberty will surely have some numismatic value as well soon. It won't be long before people realize that they are the only safe store of value, so they will go up in value for sure.

You can just hang around people that have them. Otherwise, yes, you will need a gun. Also buy some gold or silver. Unless you have something else to trade for food in the near future.

I recently found myself stopped at the UK border in Calais, France. All of my stuff was in the UK. I had cash in my pocket and plastic that wasn't leveraged with debt. That was good, but the best thing was having a good pair of shoes and a good coat. I was also glad that I hadn't gone out looking like a slacker wearing dumpy clothes that would have turned off people that I was going to have to approach for helpful information. I speak enough French to make people look at me funny. If I had also looked offensive that might have been the last straw. In a big way I got by relying on the human family. I took care of myself as much as I could. I showed people respect even if they didn't show it to me, amazing how that turns a person that started out gruffly. If I was wrong I admitted it. Mostly I thought about my goals and I set about meeting them by using my inner resources and the resources of the community that surrounded me. I got out okay even if I didn't make it back to the UK.
When it comes down to it, the people will always shout, "Free Barabbas." They love Barabbas. He's one of them. He has the same dreams. He does what they wish they could do. That other guy is more removed, more inscrutable. He makes them think. "Crucify him."

I read somewhere that deflation is good for the government, which holds large amounts of debt that can be refinanced at more "favorable" terms than what currently stands. If this truly is the case, I can see us heading down that path.

Can you get $15,000 together? Then you can buy this house or other similar ones, and have a bug out plan. Check out the property search. There are similar places all around, especially now that the property bubble has popped: link
