Read: Yeah, you can lose your "loo-nies" and "two-nies" there just as effectively as Wall Street.

Actually, the TSX has some really good companies that are harder to trade on the US exchanges, lots of oil sands, mineral companies, etc.

Next thing you know someone will tell us Mexico has a stock market!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Maddog78', 'W')ow, we really have taken it on the head this week.
An 800 point drop Monday, up almost half that the next day, flat yesterday and another 800 point drop today.

TSX has a lot of commodity stocks so it has been hit hard.

My gold, oil and nat. gas stocks have been hammered but I guess I'll hang in there and see what the winter brings.

Know how you feel my oil etfs have taken a massive hit, and I unloaded a bunch today. Unfortunately I think we have a lot more pain coming, especially in commidities they were the last fall. But will also be the first to recover. But I don't see growth comming for awhile.

Hey the TSE is finally down below the 2000 peak. I just checked and it isn't quite back to where it was when I started investing but a couple more days like today and it will be.

In fact Canada has a stock market but all serious companies cross-list in New York. The reason - when as a company you need capital you have to list in New York. Toronto is just a regional money center while well everybody know about New York...

Canada has derivatives market too... still in Montreal...

Regarding TSX - the crash would be deeper because apart from liquidity on TSX they list in overvalued Canadian dollar so numbers would experience double pressure, otherwise TSX is arbitraged to New York...

That's exactly how it is going to be especially considering how effective all levels of canadian government in destroying the value.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('smallpoxgirl', 'H')ey! You guy's by any chance wanna buy a $700 bn bailout package? It'll bet it'll help your stock market.

I was looking it up yesterday and our entire combined federal, provincial, and municipal debts are something like $711 billion (currently about $660 billion US). I don't think we could afford to double it, thought. :)

Next, we are going to hear that even Zimbabwe has a stock market.
Best performing one in the world too, by far.
Returns in the millions of percent range.

Too bad about the hyperinflation though.

Unless you bet your pension plan on publicly traded stocks, the TSX and NYSX shouldn't really matter. This is why I buy private equity offerings for start-up junior petes, where share value equals book value, and none of this 800 points per day fluctuation nonsense.

What worries me is why oil and natural gas are overshooting down so low. Demand destruction can account for some of it, but the rest seems like panic or shorting. The Panic of 2008 is making nonsense of any rational planning.

A HAHAHAHAHAAHA.

Bailout package - approved.
700$ Billion - now available.

Market response....flatlined. Nurse, do we have a pulse????

BAH HA HAHHAHAAAA

The worldwide stock market has been wildly overvalued and due for a sharp correction for years now. Why does the public think an injection of 700$ billion into one sector of one economy will restore, for example 40% losses off DOW highs from a year ago?

The reality is that the galloping stock market gains over the past 5 years were imaginary, made on the backs of our children through crazy credit expansion and paper profits - the aftermath of which will now have to be paid back by future taxpayers either overly through bailouts and the like or covertly through inflationary pressures. As Kunstler has said repeatedly, the American economy is based on greed and the belief that you can get something for nothing - and it appears that the EU and other major world economies similarly swallowed this line without a second thought over the past decade or so.

Someone on here was concerned about the impact the stock market will have on his pension - my comment there is, you can forget about your pension - pensions are just ponzi schemes invented in the 19th century, an era of cheap energy and high ROI for pretty much any innovation, which is the perfect environment for a continuously growing world economy.

Case in point: I work for the Nova Scotia provincial government in Canada and the Public Service Pension Plan recently announced that they now have a 1.2 billion shortfall in the funding required to deliver on contractual payouts to currently enrolled pensioners. That's over $100,000 needed for each member of the PSPP! I'm only 30 and fully expect to NEVER draw a pension from this fund by the time I reach retirement age (although I have to contribute by law).

I suppose the moral is...invest in a self-directed RRSP with SAFE, BORING, GUARANTEED investments or physical precious metals, EVEN if you have a pension plan at work. Similar to Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid in the US, pensions will in all likelihood NEVER be paid out to all of the people who contributed money to them. They only work in an environment of constant economic growth fueled by cheap energy.

Toronto Stock Exchange - what to buy? Fellow Canadians?

Unread postby burn0gas » Fri 28 Nov 2008, 12:48:38

Just wondering what my fellow Canadians have been loading up on on the TSX?

For Gold, I've been loading up on CEF.A.
For Dividend stocks, I've been buying a bunch of MX (Methanex) and TA (TransAlta).
Also been buying some Precious Metals funds and CDN Resources funds.
I have a CDN index tracking fund.
For currency, I'm currently only holding about 5% of portfolio in $CDNs.
Finally, I have under 10% of my portfolio in other including high tech - but don't like to think about that portion :-)

I'm no investor pro - so just wondering if anyone has any tips? I also asked before if anyone knows what the likes of Peter Schiff would say buy on TSX?

The Canadian banks are a good buy IMO. You can't compare them to the US banks, there's a night-and-day difference.

Not to say they don't have exposure to the financial crisis, they do. But I think that is mostly priced in.

You're buying quality, a great balance sheet and a very attractive dividend.

Manulife financial (MFC.TO) is a good play too I think, very beaten down.

Consider covered calls as well. Here's an interesting example.

You can buy BMO right now for $35. The dividend alone is $2.80 which is a yield of 8%. Not bad at all. But that's just gravy. The real money is in the options.

The December $34 call fetches $2.50 right now. It's $1 ITM so the extrinsic value is $1.5.

That's a 51% ROI annualized (not a typo - that's 51%).

Food for thought.

Buy silver maple leafs and hold cash, at least till February. While some of the stocks look tempting, I'm not buying anything till the new year.

Keep firmly in mind that none of the job cuts that have been announced have actually occurred and filtered into the market. And we have stupid people running the federal government who won't do anything without their stupid US masters permission.

The purchase of fellow Canadians was prohibited by imperial statue in 1833; I doubt they're listed on the TSX. How about Nortel instead? :)
