This seems a bit specific to Northwestern European families. I looked up my Syrian ancestors' historical surname, Shaheen -- the site tried to trace it to Ireland!

Shaheen is one of the most common surnames in the Middle East (I've heard it literally means Smith in Arabic). I wonder what their coat of arms would look like. For that matter, I'm curious to know what coats of arms would look like in general for cultures that don't trace their arms back to the swords and armor of medieval Western Europe.

I think, although I'm not sure, that Family Crests were generally a European thing, most notably English. I'm sure other cultures had their markings and symbols, but in terms of a Coat of Arms or Family Crest, I think thats mainly specific to the English.
It would be interesting to see what yours looks like though! Good luck with that, if you find it do share!

What is the purpose of the Coat of Arms anyway? Battlefield recognition?

There is a coat of arms for my surname, O'Neill. It contains, among other things, a bloody hand. I'm descended from impulsive people.

I have other ancestors whose name was Bacon. I was amused to find out that the Bacon family motto is, "Mediocrity is safe." How these conservative English folk managed to hook up with those impetuous O'Neills and Shaheens/Markoses I'll never know.

On second thought, I could ask my grandmother and parents.

Here's the crest of the Finnish side of my family. I didn't know about it until last year. Of course my cousins and I immediately began plans of castle construction and world domination :-D

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')WARNING: There has recently been a spate of shops and other organizations selling heraldic plaques and other items purporting to represent Coats of Arms associated with a specific surname. Their sources are unofficial and unreliable printed works of reference, which are far from comprehensive and contain numerous errors and omissions. There is no such thing as a Coat of Arms for a surname, as Coats of Arms belong only to the original grantees and their descendants in the male line.

and:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')ucket Shops?
A "bucket shop" is a term used by serious heraldic enthusiasts to describe unscrupulous heraldrymongers who dispense bogus or inaccurate coats of arms by the bucket load. They usually have a large database which contains images of historic and/or bogus armorial bearings. Even if their representations are accurate renderings of historic arms, these heraldrymongers will neglect to tell their customers that there might be anywhere from one to one hundred arms listed under any given surname. Further, when you ask these heraldrymongers "What's my coat of arms?" or "What's my family crest?" they won't bother to tell you that armorial bearings DO NOT belong to all persons of a given surname and may rightfully be borne only by the descendants of the individual to whom they were first granted or allowed, according to the Laws of Arms in the country of origin.

The "amatuer heralds site is the best I've found yet. If you cant prove direct decent to the COA, then you can make one up yourself and petition for registry...should you be so inclined.

I am petitioning for the "Moonie" as posted above. :lol: Simply because I believe in "each man and his sword" is a right not granted by a King, and varios other irrelevancies that go with the fuedal system.
