Now you know what'd be really, really cool?

To gather the huge amounts of plastic debris in the Pacific & create a new Atlantis/ecotopia.

Fishnets wouldn't do the trick in that case. The plastic junk would have to be encased somehow to prevent erosion.

If there was a large organization doing a project like this right now I would fly out there in a minute to participate. Woman, baby & all.

Would require a lot of funding & resources (and seeds) but I can't imagine anything cooler to do with my life right now.

Narz, just so you know, there are thousands of real-deal islands that do not have any inhabitants. Nothing impedes you from flying over there with a group of firends and family.

I guess you have heard of "plastiki"?

http://www.theplastiki.com/

You should also know that there are plenty of uninhabited islands in Newfoundland. Before the 1960's there were many isolated "outports", many on islands, some just really remote. The Government "encouraged" people to resettle in larger towns where they could get better services. Now most of these abandoned settlements are fading into dust, but a few have found a new life as summer communities. Google "Exploits Island Newfoundland" to get a sense of what I mean.

In the United States? What about citizenship & whatnot?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Newfie', 'I') guess you have heard of "plastiki"?

That's kind of a cool project but not something I'm really into. I'm more into doing my own thing & perhaps setting an example than trying to educate people or study how f-ed up everything is.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Newfie', 'Y')ou should also know that there are plenty of uninhabited islands in Newfoundland. Sounds interesting. I don't think my woman could handle the Newfoundland winters though.

Also, I'd prefer to stay in the States unless part of some large international project or something. I don't have the means to just drop into a new life elsewhere unless it's with a group of others with united plan.

Why are you so hung up on the United States? Many of those islands belong to the local governments no more than a Moon to that Californian who registered it as his property. Most probably arent even visited by bipedals. And I'm sure US also has some islands to offer you, if you dont mind Arctic ocean that is.

Philippines and Indonesia between them have thousands of uninhabited islands; Philippines is very easy on Americans who want to live there. I have seen islands sell for $10,000 to American controlled corporations.
The floating island idea has been around for a very long time, several old world tribes in Latin America, Africa and Asia extended their farming capacity with floating gardens. Nothing new under the sun there.
In 1st world countries your chances of doing this and not being prosecuted under some pro real estate legislation are pretty slim.

If you look at a map of BC's coastal region you have probably thousands of miles of coastline and empty islands to choose from.

I've sort of wanted to live on a small island with a small/very small community. Somewhere in South Pacific or Caribes.. But...
a very good cartoon on the topic:

dont miss the song, its the best part.

Lirics:::

Chunga-Changa deep blue dome of the sky
Chunga-Changa summer is all year-round
Chunga-Changa merrily living
Chunga-Changa singing little song

Wonder island wonder island
Living on it is easy and effortless
Living on it is easy and effortless
Chunga-Changa

Our happiness is constant
Chew coconuts eat bananas
Chew coconuts eat bananas
Chunga-Changa
Chunga-Changa there is no better place
Chunga-Changa we know no troubles
Chunga-Changa who lived here for an hour
Chunga-Changa won’t leave us

Wonder island wonder island
Living on it is easy and effortless
Living on it is easy and effortless
Chunga-Changa

Our happiness is constant
Chew coconuts eat bananas

Hey SeaGypsy, you're telling me I can buy my own private island for as little as $10k? I have an idea!

I like your little song Pretorian.
Actually the way things tend to work in remote places is the locals will accept what benefits them.
Starting up a business competing with locals is not a clever idea.
Starting a resort on a very small scale, whereby the locals make $ they did not make before you came along; can work to mutual advantage.
I showed my wife this video and she thinks we should build a mini floating resort in the Philippines.
We may just do that.
