I read somebody speculating that the WTI gain today is traders pricing in this week's EIA report - inventories at Cushing are expected to fall due to a disruption of imports in the Gulf due to that massive oil slick. I would expect this bullish push to continue for the rest of the month, WTI should pass $90 easily. The only stopper is when investors wake up and realize the government has to pull the plug at some point.

Dollar strengthening and fears of Greek PIIG flu spreading should keep it low for a while.

Some say, the greek meltdown (abrupt ratings change) could be organised speculative attack on euro via the weakest of them (among the PIGS) to prop up the $ as the global energy currency or relatively to euro and other possible-optional basket of currencies (BRIC) for some time more. Certainly, we are not in the position to know, and if this is the case, surely the headhonchos at Brussels and Frankfurt won't tell the peasants what's going on and share the intel they directly work with now. Recently, there has been some skirmishes with Washington, as the europeans want to block entry to some incomming speculative capital to eurozone.
In any event the water is full of blood, lots of sharks in there..

When will the horror END!!

I'm betting it won't go back to $30 anytime soon though, I'm becoming more convinced that OPEC would defend the new floor price, which has to be $50+

Seeing as oil is benchmarked in the West, I'm curious as to where this defence is likely to take place. In the public gardens in Caracas perhaps? Or maybe at the Kaaba in Mecca.

Call me crazy...but right now I'll speculate that any debate on the topic, but perhaps not an actual defense...would take place...uumm.....let me consult my crystal ball....ummm... on or about October 14, 2010 in Vienna Austria? Just spitballing here.

Still trending upwards, the price has had four silimar drops in the past year but recovers each time and then goes higher.

At that rate it will be another year or two before averaged oil prices pierce $100. And that's assuming the Saudis don't release some of that spare capacity they say they still have. That's not the second coming of the 2008 superspike that so many people are waiting for.

Been happening since 1970. Seems reasonable that it would continue.

It's probably fair to say that in general oil prices have not really risen at all, a few spikes but in comparison with other goods, it's a similar price.

For example how many hamburgers can you buy with a gallon of petrol in 1970 -v- today.

It's the value of money that's really dropped.
