Hyperfast missile to hit anywhere in an hour

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')AUNTED by the memory of a lost opportunity to kill Osama Bin Laden before he attacked the World Trade Center in New York, US military planners have won President Barack Obama’s support for a new generation of high-speed weapons that are intended to strike anywhere on Earth within an hour.

Obama’s interest in Prompt Global Strike (PGS), a nonnuclear weapons programme, has alarmed China and Russia and complicated nuclear arms reduction negotiations.

White House officials confirmed last week that the president, who won the Nobel peace prize last year, is considering the deployment of a new class of hypersonic guided missiles that can reach their targets at speeds of Mach 5 — about 3,600mph.

What a pile of horse pucky and huge waste of money. We proved with Mercury Atlas back in 1962 that we could hit any spot on earth within 55 minutes of launch, why do we need a whole new system 50 years later?

A cruise missile in a shipping box on sale to rogue bidders

In your banks appears harmless freighter, and the next minute your military facilities have been destroyed by explosions

The rocket consists of a booster, low-flying subsonic marching steps and detachable supersonic penetrating warhead. In fact, today (and in the next few years) rocket can overcome almost any system of naval defense, what is superior to all foreign counterparts, including the U.S. Tomahawk, which can be supplied interference in satellite navigation system GPS

Defence experts are warning of a new danger of ballistic weapons proliferation after a Russian company started marketing a cruise missile that can be launched from a shipping container.

Particularly fatal variant of anti-missile - 3M54E1 - the ability to send high-explosive warhead penetration weighing 400 kg to a distance of 300 kilometers.

In marching mode 3M54E1 flies with the usual speed of missiles of this class in the 0.8 speed of sound. The final segment of a missile falling, casts a main engine and picks up speed, exceeding the speed of sound in three-fold. In this mode to shoot down its standard means of defense is extremely difficult.

track driver could carry out pre-emptive strikes

RUSSIA offer this missile system to all who are in danger of attack from the United States. And for a very reasonable price.
This missile system in the export version has a damage radius of less than 300 km and, therefore, any restrictions in the supply of precision weapons do not apply for this group.

Stimulus spending! Think of the jobs this waste of money will create! Our economy functioned much better during the cold war, anyway. Cold War Economics is just about the extent of what anyone in Washington actually knows. That, plus this new program opens up a whole new mechanism for congress to funnel money back to their districts, thus ensuring their survival past the next election. Relax! Until they demonstrate complete incompetence, we should all just give them the benifit of the doubt and climb abord their war wagon.

Because those were ballistic missiles, and (relatively) easily intercepted. Supersonic guided missiles are a whole different matter. Frankly, the US military is 20 years behind in this department, because Russia has been building (and selling) these types of weapons since the early 90's.

From a military standpoint, it's a good move...which is exactly why it will be 30 years and 4 program cancellations before these things see the light of day *cough Osprey*.
The whole of human history is a refutation by experiment of the concept of "moral world order". - Friedrich Nietzsche
