Botany of Desire

Unread postby pablonite » Sat 24 Apr 2010, 23:23:26

Heard about this listening to NPR radio tonight. Sounded interesting, they talk about plants and their ability to mold humans for their own benefit. This sounded like a familiar theme to Parasite Rex by Carl Zimmer. 2 hours, should be good!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')HE BOTANY OF DESIRE brings Michael Pollan's best-selling book of the same name to television, showing how human desires are an essential, intricate part of natural history. The program explores the natural history of four plants -- the apple, the tulip, marijuana and the potato -- and the corresponding human desires -- sweetness, beauty, intoxication and controlling nature -- that link their destinies to our own.

Good video. The section on apples was of considerable interest to me. The story of Johnny Appleseed is very inspirational. Shows what one person can do with edible landscaping on a massive scale.
