In 1794, when Congress appropriated $15,000 for relief of French refugees who fled from insurrection in San Domingo to Baltimore and Philadelphia, James Madison stood on the floor of the House to object saying, "I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents."

Those of you who feel a need to send aid to Haiti... by all means, do so at once. Just make sure it's YOUR money you want sent... and not that of your neighbor.

And this is exactly where we're at. At some point (I stated this
the Tuesday after Katrina), CentCom will have to be the kind of
Resource needed to mitigate PO,PeakGrain, CC, and the repeat
catastrophes caused by huge Pop Densities in the very spots
where they shouldn't be.

Look right now on a map of the US. If you live within 20 klicks
of a coast or in Memphis/St Louis, you or your family is looking
at disaster in the next 20 years:

Sooner or later southern California will get hit by a massive damaging earthquake. It will not only kill people in the initial event but also so damage infrastructure that electric power, natural gas, water, and other basic utilities will be knocked out for extended lengths of time. Water will be disrupted for weeks to months in some areas with other utility disruptions as well. The vast majority of SoCal residents will survive the big one. But then migrations will occur away from places that lose the ability to support high density populations. With all this in mind new research shows that a section of the San Andreas fault in San Luis Obispo County goes off at about 137 year intervals and it is overdue for another big one.

The Carrizo Plain section of the San Andreas has not seen a massive quake since the much-researched Fort Tejon temblor of 1857, which at an estimated magnitude of 7.9 is considered the most powerful earthquake to hit Southern California in modern times.

But the new research by UC Irvine scientists, to be published next week, found that major quakes occurred there roughly every 137 years over the last 700 years. Until now, scientists believed big quakes occurred along the fault roughly every 200 years.

Nobody is required to make money. It's quite possible to live and pay no income taxes. Definitely not easy, though. But who said having a conscience is supposed to be easy?

This kind of aid is direct and actually helps people that need it. I agree completely with it. There is a lot of "aid" that drops into the bank accounts of dictators. This is not that kind of aid.

It's a disaster of horrible proportions. I can't imagine how Haiti will come out of this.

So many people had nothing before this struck. The amount of aid that will be needed is phenomenal. So many of the organizations
that have been in Haiti to help the people there are themselves devastated (Doctors Without Borders, the UN, many missionary groups).

I have friends who have done missionary work recently there and are to return to Haiti in March. I don't know how this will affect their plans.
I've seen their pictures and heard their stories of the country before this disaster, and now...it's overwhelming.

Some of you should be ashamed. If it had been Great Britain, you would be falling all over yourselves to send aid. Could it be because Haiti is predominantly poor black and hispanics? The Racism evident from the US over the last few years is disturbing.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')aitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said “well over” 100,000 people may have died in yesterday’s earthquake, as the United Nations and relief groups rushed aid to the Western Hemisphere’s poorest country.

President Rene Preval told the Miami Herald that the country was “destroyed” by the temblor, which was centered 10 miles (16 kilometers) southwest of Port-au-Prince, a city of about 2 million inhabitants, at 4:53 p.m. local time yesterday. The Associated Press said bodies are piled along streets amid the rubble from thousands of collapsed buildings.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')ORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - Haitians piled bodies along the devastated streets of their capital Wednesday after a powerful earthquake flattened the president's palace, the cathedral, hospitals, schools, the main prison and thousands of homes.

The bodies of the dead were everywhere in Port-au-Prince. Bodies of tiny children were piled next to schools. Bodies of women lay with stunned expressions frozen on the street as flies began to gather. Bodies of men were covered with plastic tarps or cotton sheets.

"Parliament has collapsed. The tax office has collapsed. Schools have collapsed. Hospitals have collapsed," Preval told the Miami Herald. "There are a lot of schools that have a lot of dead people in them."

To those of you saying we shouldn't be helping:

1. It's the right thing to do, it's in our hemisphere just off our border
2. There are 45,000 Americans in Haiti
3. There are 20 US soldiers missing in Haiti
4. Cost is negligible (it's not like we're building hospital ships from scratch just for this, we already have the resources -- consider it a training exercise)

I'm glad Canada is helping. I have thought so many times in my life how lucky I am that I was born into the relative affluence
that I grew up in (and my parents struggled raising me and my siblings). I would be grateful if other countries lent us their support
if Canada is ever impacted by a disaster of this magnitude.

The US can and must help... If we can go and invade countries for no reason, we can surely help a country RIGHT NEXT DOOR that was destroyed by an act of nature. If we have to put in a puppet government and keep a force there, so be it...
lawns should be outlawed.

The English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish are genetically near identical, they are a single ethnic group with very little change in the last 10,000 years when they arrived following the receding ice.

Actually the British Isles were inhabited by the Pictish prior to colonization by several (largely) European groups, Scandinavians, Germanic groups, Normans, Romans, etc. Ethnic differences drove wars there for centuries. They were by no means homogeneous.. Unless you consider Vikings, Romans, and pagan Celts to be the same ethnic group.

And you can thank the Andean Indians for those potatoes....

Sure but their numbers were small and it was more of a cultural domination. Here's an article about it but I recommend reading the book mentioned in the article. There's been plentry of new publications since.

Did those Andean Indians invent potatoes? I'd like to thank those Europeans who risked life and limb to bring potatoes to Europe. Oh and those Europeans who greatly improved the yields of the new world crops they found.
