Book: "Depletion and Abundance" by Sharon Astyk

Unread postby careinke » Tue 29 Dec 2009, 03:02:30

The full Title: Depletion and Abundance, Life on the New Home Front. Or, One Woman's Solution to Finding Abundance for Your Family while Coming to Terms with Peak Oil, Climate Change and Hard Times.

Phew!

I just started this book, but so far it is pretty interesting and has a very different slant than I've seen before on the topic. Evidently Sharon and several hundred of her on line friends attempted to reduce their carbon footprint by 90 % of the national average. In doing this she discovered it is not all bad, and some things are even enjoyable and fulfilling.

I think Ludi would enjoy this book, I know I am enjoying it. I'll give my final assessment when I finish the book. Has anyone else read it?

I'm also reading this book now. I'm on chapter 4, Meet the Real Economy. I like her practical approach.

I'll also comment more when I finish it.

I've been on a yahoo group with her for a few years "Running on Empty2", (along with many others) where she writes as "SharonDownonthefarm". I've enjoyed her observations for quite some time now. She's very practical. It seemed that she was either pregnant, or post-partum, for the years that she was writing. (I think she has 4 or 5 children in her fairly traditional Jewish household).

For those that want to hear her, you can go to the link above, and go to the "media" section. I am listening to the Global Public Media's second interview with her right now.

She's been a joy to read over the years, and I wish her all the best. You're correct, Ludi would love to read her (I believe). Both women are level-headed, smart, and resourceful!

I loved that book.

Like blukatzen, I've been on several yahoo groups with Sharon, and I'm a regular reader of her (now) two blogs. If you want nitty gritty practical information, she's the person to see.

I typically avoid all Doomer books like the plague, but I might give this one a shot. :)

Those of us who have hung around sites like po.com for 4 or 5 years will find the current books like this one "old hat". We've chatted this to death.
What IS interesting is how doom prep is bleeding into the mainstream.
I've been walking the rural highways of western Montana for almost 13 years and have developed a coterie of rather smart persons (mostly professionals and small business owners) who first began "giving me rides" because of my reputation as a strangely intelligent lycanthrope. I've been talking doom to these persons for many years and supposed they simply enjoyed hearing an eccentric, but harmless, person do a paranoid rant.
Not any more.
A few days ago the county tax assessor gave me a lift and immediately brought up the subject of "abiotic oil".
In the last few weeks I've had a pharmacist, a veterinarian, several educators, the local heating oil distributor, the owner of a trucking company, several ranchers, and others I don't really know very well give me rides and immediately begin talking about "impending collapse".
It's apparent that doomer talk no longer puts you in the lunatic fringe and intelligent people are seriously concerned.

oowolf, I agree that many of the topics in her book have been discussed at length in other collapse/future planning type books and articles but
I think Sharon's practical approach will have broad appeal to women especially, but to anyone who is the heart of their household and in a position to
effect positive changes within the home in a way that doesn't feel like pulling teeth.

Think about an expansive area of prime timber trees like a billion acres.

When a logging operation commences the the wood is initially very expensive because there's few timber cutters but with all the money to be made more and more timber cutters are attracted to the operation and the wood becomes less expensive.

Finally, possibly after decades the timber begins to run out but there is now an army of timber cutters who become increasingly desperate for work and some will work for very little just to stay busy so right up to the point of full depletion the market is glutted with wood and the wood is less and less expensive for consumers.
