Have Health Insurance or goto Jail

Yep, that is the opinion of a majority of Americans.
Either you have healthcare insurance or or you get fined or go to Jail.

Do you think the pollsters called the people who have been foreclosed on and are now living in tents? I'm sure they can afford ludicrously overpriced, substandard healthcare.

Hey, look at the bright side. In jail you'll get health care.

Did anyone look at the poll question?

It doesn't mention fines or jail time.

You can't expect people to think about jails when they hear the word "requirement".

This seems to me, a way that congress plans to enrich it's friends in the insurance industry. A mandate is only acceptable if there is a government option.

I have insurance because it is the responsible thing to do, and I think employers should be required to chip in for coverage. I just have a problem with what looks like an effort be congress to guarantee a customer base for their friends in the insurance industry.

In other threads on this topic some have been critical of the Australian 1.5% Medicare levy, as being an extra tax. How much does private insurance cost in the USA? I would bet it's a whole lot more than 1.5%. If the law is to say "Thou shalt have health insurance or go to jail" is that not worse than a new tax? Those with no income or very low income pay nothing in Australia. They are not prosecuted for poverty. The USA seems to be going in the direction of "A new tax, by any other name."

That 1.5% doesn't come close to paying for Australia's nation health care.

Most of the money comes from general revenues.

This is so unconstitutional, Forcing us to buy healthcare.

maybe this will signal the world to stop buying our debt.

and we can get on with the collapse.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mike3', 'A')nd what about those who don't have any income or one so meager they can't afford insurance?

Poor people will be covered by Medicaid expansion. Others will receive government subsidies or pay relatively small fines for refusing coverage.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Medicaid expansion: People with income up to 133% of the federal poverty level ($29,327 for a family of four) would be eligible to join Medicaid, the government insurance program for low-income Americans.

Subsidies: Lower- and middle-income individuals would receive government subsidies to afford health insurance. They would be available to people with incomes up to 400% of the federal poverty level ($88,200 for a family of four).

Requirements for individuals: Most uninsured adults would have to purchase health insurance or face paying a penalty, which would begin at $95 a year per person in 2014, and rise to $750 or 2% of a household's income, whichever is greater, in 2016 and beyond.

In addition to unreported income/assets, many poor people also currently receive, or are currently applying for other benefits that will help buffer their low incomes such as subsidized public/private housing, HEAP, Emergency HEAP, food stamps, WIC, food bank supplements, free school lunches, daycare assistance, lifeline phone, free cellular phones/minutes, transportation assistance, furnace/boiler maintenance/repairs/replacement, winterization/weatherization assistance, home improvement assistance etc.

The maximum penalty is substantially less than many poor households spend on beer, liquor, cigarettes and scratch-off tickets.

Yeah, wow, you're really suffering. How many are in your family and how much do you earn in a year?

To pay $100 a week here I would have to be earning $7,500 a week; but that's semantics. Health insurance is mandatory here after $55kpa, full family cover $48 a week.

Everytime I get together w/ friends and fellow citizens the first
topic is health insurance nightmares. The second is selling homes

I pay $200 per week for private health insurance for the 2 of us with a $13,500 deductible for each, although longterm disability is also covered. $200 per week is actually more than I pay for all forms of taxes.

What if the insurance company becomes bankrupt after premiums have been paid to them for many years? Or, what if they choose not to pay that longterm disability?
