A few problems here:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')or every person who is still looking and collecting unemployment, there are scores of others who have had benefits run out, accepted a part-time position, taken early retirement or a job outside of their regular field.
That's not unemployment. That's a career change. Lots of bank tellers had to find new jobs when the ATM was invented. If those tellers found new jobs as clerks at hotels or secretaries, they aren't unemployed.
No one is entitled to work in "their regular field" forever. That's just neo-Luddite nonsense.
As for the people "throwing in the towel", how are they surviving?
I'd imagine that many of them are leaving Detroit in favor of places that are friendlier to business and thus friendlier to employment.

There's a 2-1 ratio of people leaving Michigan.
Between 2000 and 2008, nearly 500,000 more people left Michigan than moved to Michigan. That's astounding if you really think about it. That's 5% of the population in only 8 years.
If people could sell their homes and escape their mortgages, I'll bet the number would be twice as high.
Will the last person in Detroit please shut off the lights?
