I have never owned an SUV. Borrowed or rented when I needed to haul, but other than that no.

I did sell my 67 VW Fastback and started taking the bus.

Recently sold my Saab 93 (25 mpg) and now drive a Pugeot 106 (lots more mpg) the problem is that I tend to get ignored on the road, people don't worry about pulling out on or cutting up a 106, they think twice about doing that to a Saab.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('BorneoRagnarok', 'N')o SUV. Luckily current massive shortage of diesel in Malaysia wipe out all the SUV from the road. The second-hand price dropped 30 percent overnight. So for those who don't sell their SUV it is prelude for the thing to come. However if you paid it fully, better keep it as the one I have below.
... However, petrol shortage seem to occurs now in remote areas. Will update ya about what's happen next. Shop for bicycle this afternoon with Gogota. He will help me to choose bicycle. As I made the decision that I am strong enough to ride a bicycle as I can manage my garden now. Going Stage 3 preparation.

Stage 3 preparation? What exactly are the stages?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('bruin', 'S')tage 3 preparation? What exactly are the stages?

I almost forget what's the stages already but it is something like these.
I believe in mental as well as physical preparation. However, mental preparation are far more important in 1st and 2st stage as most of the stuff are not necessities.
Stage 1
Possum living, independent thinking, less dependent on processed food.
No TV, radio and newspaper. (Personal VCD, National Geographics, selected MP3 only)
No cigarettes, beers and industrial drugs. (Easy as I don't do smoke and pot)
No soft drinks, sugar-watered drinks and junk food.

Stage 2
Eat local foods
Eat local vegetable
40% meat and 60 % vegetables
Drive less.
Less expenses on car by whatever method that's appropriated
CREATE A POSITIVE PROPAGANDA / BRAINWASH that you don't need all the industrial goods such as handphone, electrical goods, bla, bla.
Wash laundary with rainwater to save water.
Grow your own prototype garden

Stage 3
Push your car off the cliff (selling it off is far better)
Use bicycle extensively
Grow enough to feed 2 people.
Depends on rainwater or ground water.
Grows 100% of your own food.
Use coconut oil lamp instead of electricity.

For me Stage 1 and Stage 2 are relatively easy, I only need 1.2 years to pass those level without even thinking about the latest show on TV, my daily fix of Coca Cola, my weekly fix of beers, my monthly fix of strawberry from God's know where, my quarterly fix of new handphone. However, I brainwash myself into thinking killing snails is fun.
Stage 3 will be a long long road. I believe peak oil will be Stone Age event and not some BOOM KABOOM sort of event. However, most people don't want to adapt to Stone Age way of life. 2 days ago , I visit Gogota and saw his Stone Age way of life. Both of us agree that it is the fashion of the future. Wear less clothes as it is hard to made new clothes with hand. Some jungle ferns can cure disease. Which wild ferns can be eaten.
The list is unless....
Besides, there are massive diesel shortage in Malaysia. People are blaming government for graft. Just get a bicycle and goes on, whiners..
Use your shit instead of complaining about fertilizer's price. Use the snails to feed the chicks instead of more herbicide. Use the chicks to feed human instead of asking for more subsidies.
When all the rivers run dry, all the forests have been cleared, all the food has been eaten, tell me the value of your money

"Use coconut oil lamp instead of electricity"

That sounds delicious. Does it smell like coconut while burning?

It don't smell like coconut of course. However it took long time to extract coconut oil. Of course, Gogota and I don't like Stone Age way of life. We prefer simple way of life that's don't damage the environment. I don't know why he prefer simple life but I am one of those greenies since secondary school. Even our approach to powerdown is different. Hybrid Stone Age way of life is chosen as it is less damaging to Gaia.

Just beware of POSITIVE SELF-PROPAGANDA, it is as deadly as TV itself. However you are the author of the content. Last time , I joined one of those zombie 'uniform group' and some cults too for fun. From there I learnt brainwash method use by those groups. Most people brainwashed others as they think they are serving 'God' or society sincerely, only minority have some hidden agenda.

The funny think is SUV is very relatively cheap now in Malaysia due to fuel shortage. So let's buy more SUVs  Through Stage 1 and Stage 2 , I found out most important things in life are not things. It is pointless to gather all those things. However, please stock up on necessities.

2 High grade sword and axe
100 water cups, 50 ceramic cups (UD 0.30 per piece) , 100 plates (USD 0.60 per piece)
10 big pails
200 lighters or 5 kerosene lighter.
100kg of rice
300 tins of canned food.
Gazillion candles...
Alive alive herb plants

However, all these will be depleted. The only thing that will lasts is food finding skill. Many people here assume that with their stockpiles and farm, they can have more civilized lifestyle. The truth is without a critical mass(big community) the only possible lifestyle for peakoilers are Stone Age Way of Life or 'The Colony' way of life. You just cannot replace the plates you break, candle making is quite hard. However, you can use 100% biodegrable disposible plates such as banana leaves. Sleep when the sun goes down. Wear only minimum clothes to avoid overheat in summer.

The situation here is bad . Almost everyone including intermediate government officials blamed government (Who is Government ??) instead of acquire new skills to survive or even prospered under new system. No single soul around want to adapt to post peak way of life.

Congress Refuses to Mandate SUV efficiency

Unread postby jmacdaddio » Thu 19 May 2005, 16:05:48

I couldn't believe it when I read it: Senate panel rejects higher vehicle fuel economy rules
Our Senators really believe the best way to protect jobs with Ford and GM is to give new kickbacks to Detroit and not include SUVs in fuel economy rules. It's almost comical to watch. The market will finish off Ford and GM no matter what the GOP does.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')en. James Talent, R-Mo., said the amendment would "kick manufacturing in the teeth."
"I know the automobile companies are in difficulty now. I know their models are not selling as well as they have in the past. So this is a reason to hit them with a mandate that's going to raise their costs and make them less competitive," Talent asked.

Are these clowns serious when they think GM and Ford need more incentives to make gas guzzlers? Why is our gov't encouraging these morons to pursue a failed strategy? Plenty of American jobs would be safe if they had started with hybrids with the Japanese. It's a classic case of "if you're losing the game, change the rules", only this time they'll lose anyway.

I was pissed off that they didn't raise minimums, but then I too realized that this is a case where the vaunted "free market" is going to rattle (probably kill) Ford and GM for their lack of foresight. Congress mandating better efficiency isn't going to make a difference. Soon MPG will be the determining factor in new car purchases. Well, assuming the economy doesn't implode under its debt burden as interest rates rise.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')e might as well just dig up the oil and pour it straight into the sea. We might as well just all walk around with tattoos on our foreheads that say 'fuck the planet', or 'hell, the problems' too big. I give up.'

H1 limos have been around for years, as well as H2 limos, 1 ton pickup limos, etc... I just saw a pickup limo last night and I live in a terribly, beautifully backwoods area. It's just too bad that somehow the insanity has spread across the pond now! :-D

This Land was made for SUVs!

Unread postby Tyler_JC » Tue 24 May 2005, 22:04:58

My attempt at cheap parody... :)

This land is car land, this land is truck land,
From the Sprawling Suburbs, to the High Way Islands,
From the Theme Park Coasters, to the Nascar stadiums,
This land was made for S U V’s.

I roamed and rambled, and I followed my footsteps
To the shelves of Wal-Mart, to buy more plastic
And all around me a voice was announcing
Buy more stuff it‘s all good yippee!

This land is car land, this land is truck land,
From the Sprawling Suburbs, to the High Way Islands,
From the Theme Park Coasters, to the Nascar stadiums,
This land was made for S U V’s.

As I went driving that ribbon of freeway
I saw above me the streak of jet planes
I saw below me those golden arches
This land was made Mickeydys!

This land is car land, this land is truck land,
From the Sprawling Suburbs, to the High Way Islands,
From the Theme Park Coasters, to the Nascar stadiums,
This land was made for S U V’s.

As the sun was shining, and I was driving,
And the green lawns glist‘ning, and the mowers cutting,
As the A/C was humming, a voice was saying
"This land was made for my car and me!"

This land is car land, this land is truck land,
From the Sprawling Suburbs, to the High Way Islands,
From the Theme Park Coasters, to the Nascar stadiums,
This land was made for S U V’s.

Kind of makes me want to hop in my car and do some compulsive motoring. Pop a Woody Guthrie tape in the tape player and drive into the sunset! Heaven on Earth.

Well now you've really gone and done it, Tyler! I've got song spinning going full tilt and I can't shut it down. :? The old Dion song The Wanderer:

When I find myself
Fallin' for some girl
I hop right in my car and
I drive around the world.
Cuz I'm The Wanderer yeah The Wanderer
I roam around and round and round and round

It gets changed to The Motorist:

Soon the oil's all gone
And there won't be no more gas
I'm goin' drivin' now
Cuz the trip could be my last
Well I'm the Motorist, yeah The Motorist
I drive around and round and round and round
