Movie - "The Man From Earth"

Unread postby bobaloo » Fri 01 Aug 2008, 18:29:25

I saw one of the more interesting movies I've ever seen last night, it's called "The Man From Earth." I'd never heard about it until I heard it mentioned on the Culture of Contact podcast so decided to check it out and I'm glad I did.

It's a movie you'll either love or hate, kind of a science fiction version of "My Dinner With Andre", in that it is all conversation taking place in a living room. It's the topic of the conversation and the reactions that are important.

I don't want to give too much away, but do want to entice people to see it, so the basic premise of the movie is that a college professor quits his job and is in the process of moving away, just before receiving tenure and with a line on the department chairmanship. His friends come to say goodbye and to figure out what is going on with this odd behavior. They grill him about his motivations, he says that he is in the habit of dropping everything and moving every 10 years, and and eventually the conversation goes along these lines, "what would a person be like who was born 14,000 years ago and is still alive?"

He states that it's impossible for him to prove his claim, as anything he says can only be verified from a book, when means he could have found it in a book.

It's a movie about making extraordinary claims and their effect on people. Everyone who has seen a UFO or a ghost, or tried to talk about peak oil to people should appreciate the film. It's emotionally intense and well-written, and if you get a chance to see it by all means do so.

Yeah, I watched, bought a copy and made my friends watch it. Neat concept, but would probably offend some fundamentalists. Almost a B quality production, but a great idea. Written by a Star Trek and Twilight Zone writer.

Of course, is this topic appropriate for PO??

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')t's a movie about making extraordinary claims and their effect on people. If the intent is to do a case study on how people react to fantastic sounding claims, then yes, this could be very appropriate. Many of us have crashed up against the rocks of incredulity when we try to discuss PO to friends and family. Anything that can help shed light on the subject of how people react, even as fiction, may be helpful.

K-Pax could have done this a little better, but it was a feel-good movie more than a case study.

Thanks, I'm going to look for this movie.

Seen this movie a few months ago, good movie no doubt. And yeah it probably was made on budget but doesn't matter since the concept is really interesting.

Great film.

I found the character incredibly believable..... The part where he describes his early years as "always cold" really struck a note with me.

Thanks for bumping--forgot to come back and add comments.

I thought the premise was fascinating and made for a good story.

His take on the Bible and the life of Jesus sort of mirrors what I have thought for a long time.

I liked the way different characters reacted to his story and the end was really a neat twist.

Good movie.

Very thought provoking.

I've just watched it. Very good. It's not quite My Dinner with Andre (which I must have seen 25 years or so ago) but it is one of the best films I've seen for a long time.

Great movie.

Thinking outside of the box is EXTREMELY difficult :)

PS: The test is simple though we are dealing with a movie. If he is so old all we need to do is wait 10 yrs. to see which way the coin flips.

They had already seen him for ten years and people commented how he hadn't aged.

Edit: I loved his take on Jesus and Buddha.
