Propaganda in medical journals

Unread postby dukey » Thu 27 Aug 2009, 11:02:02

Now recently I heard that big pharma were basically writing medical articles themselves, then getting other people (in exchange for some $s) to put their names to these. So instead of real articles done by doctors and professionals in the field, you just have blatant propaganda which doctors end up reading, then making 'informed' upon. Now a few days ago in the media I found this.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'M')ONTREAL – A McGill professor has been implicated in a ghostwriting scandal where articles paid for by drug giant Wyeth Pharmaceuticals made their way into reputable journals, court documents reveal.

So the question is, how can doctors know what they are reading isn't just blatant propaganda from a drug company ? How can we trust doctors that are subjected to such propaganda ?

The medical industry, or much of it anyway, is just there to soak you of your cash dollars. My brother works in the medical field and the surgeons he works with are egotistical tyrants who viciously defend their territory from competition so that they can continue to make ~$3 million a year.

When it comes down to it, a surgeon is a little bit butcher, a little bit carpenter.

Not good at all though I still stand by science especially since peer review would shoot those without integrity down in flames.

Nice work in finding that by the way.

PS. Hopefully they can see through the lies just like many here can.

When one read's medical literature you are supposed to be taught to consided who sponsered the study, how the study was designed, and any problems. It doesn't always happen.

Hmmm, I seem to remember somebody commenting on payola in the Canadian health care system.....

oh yah that was ME.

But hey, that's nothing compared to the Canadian global warming denial industry that the mining industry funds.

Not all Canadian scientists are a bunch of skeezy hos but the ones that gets lots of publicity often are.

My wife is a perfectly healthy 23 year old. She is about to have our 1st baby.
Early in the pregnancy I argued that we should go to Australia to have the birth, partly on statistical information partly due to free health system.
But being Filipina, she wanted her mum around and decided to stay in the Philippines.
The 1st Doktor she went to found out she has a foreign husband and immediately offered her a prebooked 'ceasarean package deal'. Now we have found out that virtuually every birth is 'aided' by episiotomy (cutting the perinium in the last stage of labour).
At my wifes age and state of heath, the likelihood of her needing any interventions is about 10%; however these F'ers already want to cut her and have it all planned out.
I am furious about it. Currently I am on a work stint in Australia and will be back there a week before the baby is due. I have insisted my wife educate herself about the draconian practice of routine episiotomy. She has done so, but is now culturally intimidated to confront the Doktor on the issue. This is the daughter of a Mayor, who is capable of talking turkey with anyone; but Doktors are in a league of their own.
My bottom line is that I will sue their asses off if they do any 'routine surgery' on my wife.
If they are really all about the money as I suspect, the threat to sue should make them think twice.
