It does not matter if the donor was buying a new car or not, the cash they received almost always went to spending that stimulated the economy.

I haven't paid much attention to this because I drive what I want to drive. I just recently found out that they will be taking the cars that are traded in and using saltwater to destroy the engines.
I am deeply troubled by this. It seems quite counter to the spirit of getting as much out of the machinery we have. I have a hard time thinking that all of us buying brand new hybrids is really better for the environment than trying to get another five years out of my old truck. Further, since all of that machinery is being destroyed as per the program, there will not be spare parts to keep the fleet we have in trim and working.
On the cynical side, it would seem that this is a great way to get all of us back into the slavery of car loans, propping up the banking system, and giving a huge gift to the car people.
Good for the banksters, the auto industry, encouraging the indebtedness of the citizenry, causing us to hasten through the machinery invested, without tapping into any of its reuse potential. And this whole thing is going to be sold as wonderful for the environment?

Well... I'm going to take advantage of it.
I own two vehicles. The oldest is a 1984 GMC 3/4 to 4X4 diesel... which I bought new over a quarter century ago. It is rust free, thanks to the dry climate here... but with 225,000 miles on it... time to retire. My newest vehicle is a 1997 Suburban 4X4 with 270,000 miles. Runs like a top.

If you can fix your own car it's always more economical to use used, both for yourself and for the environment.
I agree with your assessment, enslavement is what this is all about. In fact, if you know one of the stories about Detroit's decay, they say it was designed to reenslave the workers into home loans in the suburbs. All I can say is that I wish I had money now to buy junk cars for replacement parts right now.
On the other hand, I heard this program only applies to vehicles that get less than 17mpg. This would exclude my big boat luxury sedan but would include my light duty pickup. Go figgur.
As a poor person, what concerned me in the past were these vehicle donation programs which allowed people to claim a donation to put on their 1040 come tax time. The way I saw it, it propped up used car prices by bringing more professional salespeople into the used car scene, whereas previously the owner might have nearly given the car away to someone who could use it, since it was such a problem to get it off one's hands.
Really, we're all just flotsam in this together.

Really. My big boat luxury sedan has seen 221kmi. Next month I get the tranny overhauled and next year I'll drop a new block into it. You're giving away a beautiful antique, that GMC. So sorry to hear it go.

We considered it and even went shopping for one but we walked away with sticker shock. A paid for vehicle that runs great but gets 16MPG is better than a $400-500/mo payment. Not worth it in my opinion.

We know vehicles can be driven 50 years if they are maintained. The Cubans have proved it.
We had a thriving business in our town called Hart's Auto Parts. He rebuilt starters, magnetos, generators and alternators. He was put out of business by the discount auto chains that bought cheap asian parts. It became cheaper to replace than to repair.
I think we will see the rise of small repair shops again.

Time to unplug man. None of this makes any sense from any standpoint other than spin and electioneering. The game for this administration is "come sit on the lap of Obamaclaus and he'll have Little Timmy Geitner charge whatever toys you want on his presidential credit card." It's bread and circus. It's not supposed to withstand in-depth scrutiny. Ultimately it's a giant middle finger to the next administration and whoever of us are around long enough to try and pay off the bill.

I have an old V6 Mitsubishi pickup that would just qualify that I was hoping to use - except no registration or insurance so it doesn't qualify. I haven't driven it in about a year and half. Any buyers? Cheap!
