This should be a good one. Get those VHS tapes set to record.

Couldn't find much online other then this... They advertised it during 20/20 tonite..

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')ith Americans facing yet another summer season of rising gas prices, ABC News' Charlie Gibson has traveled the country to uncover some of the little known secrets of the oil industry, including why prices fluctuate so much and who exactly is pulling the strings. "Over a Barrel: The Truth About Oil," an ABC News special reported by Gibson, will air on WEDNESDAY, JULY 22 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on ABC.

From the trail of oil pipelines snaking through Oklahoma to the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, Gibson has crisscrossed the country in search of the answer to one salient question what is the true cost of oil? He reports from Cushing, Oklahoma, a remote outpost where the price of a barrel of oil there dictates the price nationally. He travels 160 miles off the coast of Louisiana to one of the deepest drilling oil rigs in America and also visits "refinery row" along the Gulf Coast, where a third of America's oil refineries are concentrated.

Despite talk of dwindling oil reserves, new technologies have vastly increased the amount of oil, providing a larger reserve today than a decade ago. Last summer's $147 a barrel price baffled many Americans, but Wall Street insiders tell Gibson that speculators caused the price to skyrocket. Additionally, Gibson discovered that, according to memos obtained by ABC, oil companies have artificially kept the number of refineries low to keep their profits high, in turn leading to greater price instability at the pump.

Americans consume a quarter of the world's oil, yet make up only 3% percent of the global population. When confronted by these facts by Gibson, Energy Secretary Steven Chu admits "we're headed for a train wreck." Chu explains how a new generation of biofuels could help the U.S. decrease its dependence on foreign oil. ABC News visited Chu's former lab in Berkeley, which is doing cutting edge work in this field. In addition to interviews with dozens of experts and industry leaders, Gibson also sat down with General Wesley Clark, the former NATO commander who has become a vocal proponent for ethanol.

Tom Yellin is the executive producer of "Over a Barrel" and Peter W. Klein is the producer. The program is a production of The Documentary Group for ABC News.

hmmmmmmm.... Sounds like it will be packed full of BS...

We all knew it was the evil oil barons and speculators. Once the Energy Czar takes over production and distribution all will be well.

Relax we all are going to be government employees.

I wonder if they are going to mention America's Saudi Arabia, the Bakken formation?

Seriously though, this:

is something everyone in this country needs to understand.

Especially in the context of historic US oil production and current usage patterns.

"Americans consume a quarter of the world's oil, yet make up only 3% percent of the global population"

When did the world suddenly reach 10.2 billion people? That's 33.33 times 306 million.

Right there is a terribly misleading lie for the United States is 4.5% of the people in the world.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('frankthetank', 'A')dditionally, Gibson discovered that, according to memos obtained by ABC, oil companies have artificially kept the number of refineries low to keep their profits high, in turn leading to greater price instability at the pump.

LOL. Since when are refineries profitable? :-D

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('frankthetank', 'i')ncluding why prices fluctuate so much

I bet they won't touch the real reason, namely the that the market changed from being supply driven to be demand driven as spare capacity dissapeared because of growing global demand. Add to that that new supply became extremely inelastic (no new good big fields to drill) and the only remaining way to reach equilibrium was a price hike so radical that it reduced demand in the only place in the world* where demand is elastic: the Anglosaxon world (minus the UK) in general and the US in particular. Then suddenly the US and world economy falls to bits and oil demand plummets, recreating a big spare capacity, and the market turns back into being supply driven overnight. Naturally the price plummets.

It's not harder than that. There might have been some speculative froth, but the underlying big price movements are perfectly understandable with the benefit of hindsight.

* As only the Anglosaxon world has its price of gas closely tied to the price of crude oil. The price is regulated in China and India etc and in the oil exporting nations, while in Europe consumers are partly sheltered from oil price movements because of high gas taxes and the at the time strengthening euro.
Peak oil is not an energy crisis. It is a liquid fuel crisis.

Thanks to ABC, the masses will be told what to think about PO. It will undoubtedly be a soft-sell, featuring a nice, happy ending so the people can watch their local news immediately after the show and go right to sleep, to dream of bigger houses, better cars, and whatever consumerist trinkets they were told to desire during commercial breaks. Our knowledge of the situation will then be considered by the masses as a contrarian viewpoint, rather than a crackpot theory. I don't know which is worse.

I predict a technologic and alternatives supplied paradise will be portrayed at some point towards the end of the show.
This will be the over arching theme, that technology and innovation will be our saviors.

Oh and one other prediction, Peak oil will get only cursory mention and it will only be in the light that its not for decades yet to come!

Anyone want to bet me on it? 8)

On right now...

So basically they are following gasoline from the gas station all the way back to the oil field.

Not any mention yet of peak oil.
