Buddhist Inspired (almost permanent) Happyness and Joy

Unread postby bodigami » Sun 28 Jun 2009, 12:39:21

well, since Buddhism itself was never even meant as an "everyone convert to my religion" type of religion/philosophy; this thread is to discuss specifically Nirvāna (being free from suffering) on a positive way: being happy and having joy in a decaying world.

The Three Characteristics of existence:

Annica (impermance). All things we cling to or are averse to, do not last.

Dukkha - (unsatifactoriness). Every life contains difficulty, suffering or unsatifactoriness.

Anatta - not self. All these things we believe to be "us", body, thoughts, emotions, etc. are not us.

So, we can be happy no matter what, Nirvana or Nibbana. There is difficulty (PO), but it is not Self.

How is that for a bit of discussion? :)

FYI, Buddha was born around 500 BC. No Buddhist artifact can be dated from 1800 BC. Maybe1800 AD.

By the way, given that the human race was so "intelligently designed" (you can really tell by the last generation of automobiles), on what day were fossil fuels formed?

Have to check my bible and see...

anatta does not imply the inexistance of any form of self, it just says that most things and phenomena people cling to as self... are NOT self.

My wife is Buddhist, from Thailand. Allways happy and smiling, as are our children. I'm (non-practicing) Christian (sad and miserable !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

Certainly the Thai (Buddhist) way of life is alot more "positive and happy" than ours in the west. Though as the country "develops" and turns to western ways things slowly change, for the worse.

It's allways nice to visit Thailand, "The land of smiles".

Gasmon

I personally prefer Buthan as buddhist country... or Japan.

The world is not decaying, it is progressing. Be full of joy as everything falls apart and is blown up? It's all about perspective. The killer philosophy is that of MATERIALISM (pursuing treasure). Avoid that and place the emphasis on people, relationships, and social progress. Avoid a war mentality as well. Why does history have to end with a huge battle? It doesn't.

Avoid the monastic lifestyle of resignation and death!

To get to Nirvana you must accept that life is suffering, and we live in a society that tries to avoid it as much as possible. I've studied meditation and autosuggestion my whole life. Happiness is achievable if you just let what you can't control, well, happen.
