$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('the48thronin', '
')Hmmm a land of free men who solved their own problems and created a country not ruled by hereditary or "divine right" rulers.

Ran out of cheap domestic oil and started a sell off of assets and movement of manufacturing that to this day has continued resulting in an economy of paper traders instead of paper makers.

Gave over to social engineering after the 29 crash that solved no problems until the rulers decided to use warfare as a stimulus package.

That socialism and wealth redistribution so permeate the society that fraud and ab use are both public and private sector norms..

Tell me again about that recovery? What did we grow a house of cards spouting huge success stories about swapping phony papers back and forth while contracting the brick and mortar and labor to the slave master offering the lowest costs.?

Maybe you haven't noticed the lack of steel mills etc IN THIS COUNTRY.

Ah let me guess as global masters it isn't necessary for the USA to be strong by itself.. we can use those other people to defend us with their steel mills.

Thomas Jefferson would be so proud!
Samuel Adams too....

Since you think the collapse is soon. I assume you have fully prepared or you are vigorously preparing for it.

Or are you one of those sheeple that doesn't put your money or your life where your money is and types about it on forums all day?

I vote the latter.

I got my money out before a 26 year old began trading at 16 years of age. in fact probably before he was potty trained...LOL

Went to bank (HSBC) in my town yesterday after closing time tried cash machine - wouldn't give me any. Checked balance - plenty in. Tried again still no joy.

Tried Lloyds TSB - no joy, Abbey - no joy 2 security guards inside said try again in 10 minutes. Tried Nat West - no joy.

Went back in Pub apologised to lads as couldn't get round in - to much hilarity I might add.

Went back to Abbey and success at last

Was sweating for a few minutes!!

When you know the economic carpet is unraveling... any strange event like that is a Maalox moment LOL

The beginning of the shortage will be sporadic, but the cyber attacks on the bank card nets might work any time for any amount of time.. kinda scary that!

Back in 2000 I bought a 6.5kW diesel generator and a couple of 100 gallon water bladders. Didn't need them but that's OK. All together they cost me around $4,000. Still have them in the basement.

Since 2000 I have spent several thousand more than $4,000 on life insurance, home insurance, and car insurance. I have not collected a dime on any of that of which I am glad, especially the life insurance.

So isn't doing preps just another form of insurance? And, if you like gardening and dirty fingers, more rewarding than working in a cell? (I don't like to call them cubicals, call them cells, its more honest.)

This is an on-going argument I am having with my wife.

I can envision a time in the not too distant future where our "investments" would go to zero. But if we had bought some tangible assets then there would be some worth that we could hang onto.

There was a thread a while back about what would be the best alternative for money. Gold, silver, rice, ammo. As I recall it was never really resolved in any meaningful way. Most did not even have good suggestions. (I liked SILVER bullets as you could trade them AND kill zombies.)

Maybe this is a good place to reopen that question. I go down to the bank, cancel my 401K, drain my savings account, cash in my savings bonds and get, lets say $200,000. What do I do with it? Under the mattress? But if the currency collapses then I have accomplished nothing.

So what is a good tangible alternative to money? If I draw out my my cash where do I put it?

Good question, I'm interested in advice also - beyond stocks, PM, land and long shelf-life food.

I just went to the bank today to service a maturing CD. The CD ending was at 5.15 % APR and the rollover rate was 0.8% ! By going into the bank and geting a "bankers special" I put it in an 11 mo at 2.25 %. Pretty lame. I need a wifey to help me spend my money I guess. So after I resolved the CD, the banker gave me a hard sell on a home equity line.

Besides those... the options are pretty limited especially if someone doesn't trust the banking system, real estate, or the stock market.

Here is strategy I am thinking about for what its worth. Probably worth very little to PO members who think we are going to collapse.

I have been investing in stocks like crazy over the last 12 months. I was fully invested a couple of weeks ago but am starting to sell some thanks to the recent rally. The only debt I have is my mortgage and it will be paid off in January.

My investment portfolio is as follows:

5% High Yield Corporate Bonds aka Junk Bonds
10% Investment Grade Corporate Bonds
20% Cash
30% Individual Stocks
35% S&P 500

I believe the markets will pop and drop over the next couple of years and inflation will creep into the picture. When the markets pop I will sell a little and move it into cash. When the Fed starts to raise interest rates I plan on moving some of my cash into Treasuries and hope to build a Treasury ladder.

I will also keep cash on hand to co-purchase (with my brother and parents) any acreage that comes up for sale next to our family ranch aka doomstead. We were able to purchase 140 acres a little of a year ago for a good price ($2,100/acre).

Empty ABM machines are as old as ABM machines.
That does not bring us any further.
Most here think that the system will still last for some years.

I, financial dummy, cannot imagine that, with this amount of depth.

Becoming Unravelled. FFS

I was actually more concerned about not being able to stand my round, and as I said I did get the money. To not consider why, when it's never happened with 4 different banks in a small town before!

The previous week had a 'pension' review with the financial advisors at work. I don't contribute, it's just part of the package. The funds had only fallen 42% in the previous year! 8O

42% - 100% is a fairly big difference, but not unimaginable.
