I am NOT an expert.
I am, however, an 800 lb. gorilla.

Two characteristics come to mind: Indomitable Spirit and Integrity.

Sticking around the site, even when you don't like the harsh implications
of some things. And having the integrity to admit you don't know
everything and being willing to share corrections of your facts.

I win some debates and I lose some. But my goal is to discover what
the facts are and not to cling to being right. So to me being an Expert
is being able to admit when the facts have changed and be able to
share that new knowledge with others. Many people get stuck in
denial of new trends and that in itself prevents them from absorbing
what one might call expertise.

I'm not saying the expert thing is anything too important, but to me it
implies the person knows the current arguments and will focus on new
facts when they learn the facts have changed, even if it means that
sometimes they have to admit they were wrong.

As long as we're playing this game, I suggest Patience be bestowed the rainbow lieutenant's bar. If he isn't an "expert," who is?

I second this. Let's get this designation to mean something real.

When I was around 19 years old, I made the wonderful discovery that I knew almost everything about any subject I encountered. Older people being jealous of this, often dissed and ignored me and as the years went by this vast knowledge evaporated and left me as dumb as a box of rocks. If only I had acted on things back when I was smarter I probably would not be here on peakoil.com, getting stumped on the big words, and hoping that Mr. Bill would explain to me just one more time how my smarts took years to evaporate, but my money went in a New York second.

When a wealthy man meets a clever man the wealthy man is neither wealthier nor cleverer afterwards. But have a great weekend anyway eFarmer. It's almost Christmas and year-end is just around the corner. Season's greetings. MrBill.

Merry Christmas Mr. Bill and holiday greetings to PO
readers and posters of every tradition. Though I had
my doubts during this year, my heart is once again
light in knowing I shall wake on Christmas morn with
a huge amount of gas at my disposal. I hope all of you
awake with as much gas as you can stand as well.

dissident's contributions, especially in the environmental section, are simply stunning in the depth of knowledge they reveal, IMVHO.

He would be my candidate for expert, if he wants it.

Happy holidays to all!

I recommend SeaGypsy for consideration for expert status. He's been here only a little while, but it's obvious enough to me, already, that he should have the rainbow bar. He's a remarkable new member with a great deal to teach us all.

Maybe after some more time goes by, he should be considered for this. Keep an eye on him!

I nominate John Denver. Probably our premier antaigonist on this Board. Researches subjects well, gives long and thorough explanations of his beliefs- even set up an adversarial web site. If anyone desrves Expert status- he does. But I'm sure Aaron would never do it...

Perhaps PO.com could have a "super duper expert" for those "experts" who feel the expert tag doesn't adequately descibe their true knowledge and abilities. lol

My brother recently told me of a professor who held up a picture of some Nazi's and told his class that this is the outcome of people who have all of the answers, To label people as experts, implies those without this tag, have opinions which dont hold the same influence of stature.

Those ideals, i believe are what have taken humanity to the brink of collapse.

Thanks Heineken, but not likely considering the number of people in 'high places' who hate me and attack me for going hard against racism.

As far as I am aware the only thing I would qualify on is the topic of my tag i.e Sea going survival strategy. Possibly also on existing as a minority in a dominant culture. The former I would not be entitled to until I have caught up with Dmitry who at least is already living on his boat. The latter seems of little interest to the mostly white mostly American board.

Also as I keep being reminded by some 'hard core' members I have only been here a couple of months or less and I talk too much.
