The mining industry is taking a beating like we have never seen. Mining is cyclical in boom and bust structures. Standard practice in a bust is companies lay off all but core personnel (after ensuring senior management salaries :x ). The industry response often has the knee jerk feel to it all. The last bust hit in the late 1990's.

This time round it is really terrible. Rio Tinto has laid of something like 20% of its work force and 70% exploration in the first pass. BHP Billiton has shut down several mines and both of its Australian research centers. All contractors have been laid off. Many smaller mining companies like Oz Minerals are going under. All companies are battening down the hatches and laying off staff, shutting down projects and dumping equipment that was only a few short months ago in high demand.

Many friends of mine have this dazed shocked look on their faces. Not 6 months ago they were going flat out and there was not enough staff to do anything outside brutal production targets. Now literally overnight the market is flooded with unemployed but highly educated people.

Personally, I have about 18 months left in a 3 year contract. I am Ok provided the division stays afloat (nothing is certain). Many of my staff were worried so I took steps to bomb proof their jobs. Initially my supervisors thought I had lost the plot and was behaving inappropriately as a manager of technicians and junior engineers. My performance review would have reflected this. Now, 3-4 months later, the world is a different place and the heat is now off me. What this meant though, there is now a que of people outside my office with hat in hands asking for work. Many of these people are my friends and I have had to turn them away. This has been the most awkward time in my career.

I have taken Pops advice to heart though some time ago. I made a short term plan, a medium term plan and a long term plan. The first two are now in place but will not have the resources for some time for the third. From here I continue to develop the first two plans and help others develop theirs.

I know damn well this is only the start. Pay attention people. Self pity nor finger pointing will help you one little bit. Talk is cheap and bullsh*t is dangerous. Reality is closing fast. Its like sky diving with lunch in your pack instead of a parachute. Its really only the last half inch that hurts, but its kind of worth paying attention to.

Switch on, understand your event horizon as it really is, make a plan,...then make a start on that plan. There comes a time when the time to talk is eclipsed by the time to act.

Kind Regards

This is prehaps a bit late but I'm sorry to hear that criticalmass. There have been lay offs at my company and I heard today that starting salarys will be reduced. Which seems odd because there is a hiring freeze at the moment. I can only presume it's a plan to reduce everyones salary...

Sales it is (for now) and I'm staying out of corporate because of how unpredictable it is. Relocation is in progress and I'll technically be out of the desert. That's a big relief that even if I lose the house- I should at least be in a better location geographically. My girlfriend is following me too. She started believing what's coming in August when all of the major markets started crashing around the world.
In the interim I'll be practicing more survival skills and teaching friends. I owe that to the ones that listened.

Food for thought: Think about how your grandparents lived through times like the Great depression. If you don't have living grandparents, visit the wealth of knowledge that is your local nursing home. You might be surprised at how fond these people are of the way they lived through that time. It was an adventure.

I'm really getting worried now. I couldn't fall asleep last night due to a mix of rage and worry.

My husband is a teacher and best case scenerio will be a 10% salary cut. Worst case will be loss of job. So we have to find $300 a month to cut. Good thing we have both cars paid off and half of the house. Still, the new salary qualifies us for Peach Care for the kids (state kid's health plan) and even some Medicaid. (but we can't sign up for Peach Care because state employees are locked out)

There are NO teaching jobs anywhere. I don't know what we will do if we lost this job. I was also a teacher before staying home with the kids, so my resume is limited as well. Daycare would eat up all of the wages that I could earn anyway.

So for those of you who think teacher's unions are so powerful, they don't exist here in Georgia.
Florida is working on passing a law to let school districts go to a 4 day week.
That was my canary in the coal mine indicator, so we'll see how many districts actually implement it for the next school year which begins in August down there. They are facing cuts down there so severe that all cost-saving options will be needed: massive layoffs, 4 day week, ending all sports, etc

Not feeling good about this at all...

All of the teachers that are not on professional contracts have been told they will get their pink slips this summer. All national boards teachers have been told that their bonus is being put off yet again.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('cbxer55', 'M')y wife lost her job at the end of October, the position was re-located to Missouri. She was offered a transfer to follow it, but declined, who wants to live in Kansas City, MO.?

I will lose mine as of the end of the year. Entire plant is closing due to cancellation of all new railcar construction. Company also is closing 5 plants in Texas, as well as a wind turbine factory in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Word from the unemployment folks is "The situation is bleak at this time!" I'd say that is putting it mildly and qualifies as the understatement of the year.

Huh? Kansas City is a perfectly fine place to live. I lived in and around there several different times in my life and visited many times.

Anyway, anecdotally, things are getting absolutely dire out there. Wife and and her friend that rents our little guest house both lost their job or one of their part time jobs at the same time. My wife's best friend just found out she will be furloughed 1 day a week. I have a job, but my future is looking uncertain- company in major flux right now. My two best friends in other cities are either hinting that they think we may never see each other again because of some major economic calamity, or talking about how they just came in under the wire moving to a new company, which is now totally frozen hiring and everthing else (panic mode) and their future is uncertain. Whenever we e-mail or talk, all of our old circle of friends is either layed-off or thinking that they may soon lose their jobs. All of us in are our mid 20's-early 30's. Most of these developments have happened in the last month or so!

I graduated from college in December with a forestry degree. I've applied at every sawmill in a 100 mile radius of me so far with no luck.

I worked at a hotel while in school because on the weekends there was some down time when I could get studying in. I'm still technically employed but haven't been given any hours since the end of January because things are slower than they've been in the 15 years the place has been open. I've been delivering pizzas in the mean time, but I want to get out of that as soon as possible. In the long run its not worth it, even if it does help me make my nut for rent in the short term.

I might actually get in at another hotel down the way thanks to a friend of mine. Yeah networking. That should be enough to pay my bills and give me a small surplus while I look for something more worthwhile. I take the civil service exam for a state forester position later this month. I'm studying to destroy that test....

+1 here

I was "impacted" by "workforce reductions" this week along with 20 of my closest friends.

Small company, around 200 ppl I would guess. We had a round of layoffs about 9 months ago as well.

I guess this qualifies as a depression now.

I lost my job in the 80's so I can speak with some experience. It took me a long time and a failed marrage, but I can offer these points.

(1) Don't look back.

(2) Lower your standards.

(3) Always be prepared to loose your job, all jobs should be looked at as temporary.

(4) Try to get a contract rather than part time or full time employment.

(5) Be like the spider in the story of Robert the Bruce.

Thanks for asking. Not sure yet. Between what we saved, the severance, and unemployment, we have enough money to ride out the lease and finish the children's school year.

I am not in a bad situation as I now have two career possibilities. I may go back to the one I like. We'll just have to see what turns up.

+1 Lost my job in Feb and have started my own business. So far it's keeping my head above water.
My brother's fiberglass manufacturing business is also on the brink as his clients are having problems paying, orders are way down too. He can't go on being a bank for his clients.
He actually makes stuff thats useful unlike AIG et al. Where is the bailout for people like him?

Has your brother researched the stimulus plan to see if there are any programs he can benefit from?

http://www.recovery.gov/

The main aid seems to be tax breaks, but there may be some forms of grants available.

I'm sure our Govt in Australia will be doing something that would be worth looking into.
The problem is cash flow now. If all his clients would pay up now then there is no immediate problem.
His operating costs meanwhile are not insignificant in the $10s of thousands each month.
My brother has said to them it is now cash on delivery, but they complain they will go broke if he does that.
I'm wondering if he should just shut up shop while he still has the shirt on his back.

My son starts unemployment next week. He is a cement mason. Says there is lots of jobs on the books, but none of the customers can get loans from the banks to pay for them. Fortunately, he learned quickly to save during the boom times.

One of my former customers, his wife and son all lost their jobs since three different manufacturers they worked for are moving to Mexico. They're selling their home and moving in with their daughter and son-in-law.

Quite a few local teachers and school staffers are getting the axe as well.

One of our family businesses is eliminating about 20 jobs although it's due to increased efficiency, not the economy.

We're getting hundreds of highly overqualified job applicants for office, warehouse and truck driving jobs.
