$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ReverseEngineer', '
')My main questions for the short term revolve around the mobility questions, aka how long will I be able to Jet Set my way around the world here, renting spanking new Nissan Altimas (still has new car smell!)? I mentioned I am heading down to Oregon next month, and I was thinking of doing a trip to NZ in late spring. The Airports still seem functional and the price of fuel these days should keep the airlines somewhat profitable, long as some people can still afford to fly anyhow. Anybody want to hazard a guess how long before the commercial transportation network breaks down? 6 months? A year? Two?

If you haven't decided where you want to make your final stand, now is definitely the time to do your scouting missions. That's why I just drove through Maine and Vermont.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')ince his mortgage was securtitized, nobody directly holds a lien against it and nobody will take over the taxes so so far he has been able to stay on the property.

Hm, I hadn't thought of that. If that sort of thing spreads, it's certainly a sign of collapse. People just squatting in houses, nobody really able to figure out who owns the property.

Oh, and just for laughs you should dress up like Clint Eastwood when you guys have your peakoil meetup. :)

Oh, I already decided on the Last Great Frontier. I just like to travel, I've been a Nomad my whole life really. I'd like to see what the Peak Oil possibiliites for NZ are first hand before the ability to travel around dries up.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pops', 'G')lad you had a good time with the Clan.

Though I'm more of a Redleg than a bushwacker I've found plenty of welcome from both camps here - don't anyone be afraid to come to the Ozarks; just be a good neighbor and most will accept you.

By coincidence, I am sitting here watching another great Clint Eastwood film about those Missouri Rebels on the History Channel. Next to "Pale Rider", my favorite. "The Outlaw Josey Wales".

Nobody dispenses JUSTICE better than Clint.

You really are a jet-setter, huh? What's given you the idea of visiting New Zealand? Very nice country, I must say - I visited there at the tender young age of 19 and loved every minute of it. I've always wondered how they would fare in the post-peak era. I'm surprised that you'd ever consider leaving the Last Frontier, though. Has the extreme cold given you second thoughts about living out the rest of your days there?

I do have to say that Canada still ranks at the top of my list for my final post-peak refuge. For one thing, it's on the same continent as I, so the logistics of moving there isn't nearly as great as upping stakes and moving to another hemisphere. More importantly, Canada is a vast nation with less than 15% of the US population, blessed with vast resources that *should* be able to sustain a comfortable standard of living for its inhabitants for many decades to come. Also, they have that wonderful, Utopian-style universal health care that I cherish so much (and the US will never have, alas). Having a very good friend there that's constantly dropping hints of why I should emigrate is another factor, I must admit...hehe. Hey, it's good to have friends in the right places, huh? (wink, wink).

Anyone else on here seriously thinking of moving from the US to Canada before TSHTF? If so, I'd love to hear of it.

In regards to your questions about mobility, I give it 3 more years, give or take. Once we get further out than that, I would say wherever you happen to be, that's where you'd best plan on spending the rest of your life, unless you plan on being a homeless refugee roaming around the countryside like the hobos of the 1930's.

I'm not considering leaving the Last Great Frontier. I mainly would like to see a few of the places I missed in my travels. Been to Australia, South America and Europe. Covered the North American continent quite thoroughly in my Big Rig. NZ has particular appeal to me to see because of its peculiar geography and low population, which make it a high ranking Doomstead country. I also have a friend in NZ I know for years through one of my online groups, and I would like to meet her in person.

In a word, yes! Unless you're a millionaire, with liquid assets that can be transferred into the country, about the only way I know of being able to immigrate there is to marry your way in.

That being said, however, I know of a woman and her partner (male, but not married) that did move from here to New Zealand, since she had dual citizenship. Her partner got a free pass under their domestic partner policy (which Canada offers as well). Unfortunately, the word on the grapevine is that they're having trouble making a go of it there and are considering moving back to the US. Gimme a break, if you can't "make it" in a paradise like NZ, you might as well as toss the towel in and forget about it all. :(

RE, that sounds wonderful, hooking up with an online friend down there. Where does she live within the country? Make sure you do *both* islands - they're about as different from each other as different can be. Queenstown is a bit on the touristy side, but the "big 4" (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin) are all wonderful places to visit, as well as the endlessly diverse countryside. And Milford Sound is a "must-see"...it's got to be one of the most beautiful spots on Earth, imho. As for the time of the year, I recommend Jan-March. If you're going to go all that way, might as well as go in the austral summer and enjoy those delightfully mild, breezy days and bright sunshine. Summers there are surprisingly cool, especially in the South Island.

Ahh...such fond memories I have of that place... :)

I'm not into churches and guns are the same as hammers/wrenches/skillets to me.

If you have any original thoughts feel to share.

More importantly, do you look like Jed Clampett and do you have a daughter who looks like Ellie-Mae?

I suggested meeting at Panera, I don't recall your saying you were going to be there so I never went there. I was over at Walmart shopping.

Saturday is the Party, but I'll be puttering around town on Sunday checking out my Storage Unit. Maybe lunch at Panera Bread on Campbell?

Sunday should be good

If you drink, I always recommend Brew Co.

It looks as if he did say meeting you there Sunday.
