$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'M')y main questions for the short term revolve around the mobility questions, aka how long will I be able to Jet Set my way around the world here, renting spanking new Nissan Altimas (still has new car smell!)? I mentioned I am heading down to Oregon next month, and I was thinking of doing a trip to NZ in late spring. The Airports still seem functional and the price of fuel these days should keep the airlines somewhat profitable, long as some people can still afford to fly anyhow. Anybody want to hazard a guess how long before the commercial transportation network breaks down? 6 months? A year? Two?
You really are a jet-setter, huh? What's given you the idea of visiting New Zealand? Very nice country, I must say - I visited there at the tender young age of 19 and loved every minute of it. I've always wondered how they would fare in the post-peak era. I'm surprised that you'd ever consider leaving the Last Frontier, though. Has the extreme cold given you second thoughts about living out the rest of your days there?
I do have to say that Canada still ranks at the top of my list for my final post-peak refuge. For one thing, it's on the same continent as I, so the logistics of moving there isn't nearly as great as upping stakes and moving to another hemisphere. More importantly, Canada is a vast nation with less than 15% of the US population, blessed with vast resources that *should* be able to sustain a comfortable standard of living for its inhabitants for many decades to come. Also, they have that wonderful, Utopian-style universal health care that I cherish so much (and the US will never have, alas). Having a very good friend there that's constantly dropping hints of why I should emigrate is another factor, I must admit...hehe. Hey, it's good to have friends in the right places, huh? (wink, wink).
Anyone else on here seriously thinking of moving from the US to Canada before TSHTF? If so, I'd love to hear of it.
In regards to your questions about mobility, I give it 3 more years, give or take. Once we get further out than that, I would say wherever you happen to be, that's where you'd best plan on spending the rest of your life, unless you plan on being a homeless refugee roaming around the countryside like the hobos of the 1930's.
Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide...
