Teenagers' habit of distributing nude self-portraits electronically - often called "sexting" if it's done by cellphone - has parents and school administrators worried. Some prosecutors have begun charging teens who send and receive such images with child pornography and other serious felonies. But is that the best way to handle it?
"Hopefully we'll get the message out to these kids," says Michael McAlexander, a prosecutor in Allen County, Ind., which includes Fort Wayne. A teenage boy there is facing felony obscenity charges for allegedly sending a photo of his private parts to several female classmates. Another boy was recently charged with child pornography in a similar case.
In some cases, the photos are sent to harass other teens or to get attention. Other times, they're viewed as a high-tech way to flirt. Either way, law enforcement officials want it to stop, even if it means threatening to add "sex offender" to a juvenile's confidential record.
"We don't want to throw these kids in jail," McAlexander says. "But we want them to think."

I am not nearly a teenager but I have received such pics from women more than once. I never send them myself. Does that mean I should run crying to the DA and get those women arrested for unsolicited pornography distribution?
Time for the authorities to wake up and butt out, it takes a moment to deleate a message I didn't want off my phone or my email and the same is true of everyone else.
Teenagers in particular do dumb things, it is all part of growing up and new technology just provides additional ways to act dumb. Time wounds all heels, and it will cause this to fade away when a new dumb fad is invented too.

I can remember twenty years ago teenagers would flash or moon cars for kicks. Of course a photo lasts a lot longer and carries more weight than a flash, but the logic is probly the same. l'd hate to think of some immature 18 y/o have to go through life a as a registered sex offender for a stupid prank.

Kids will be Kids. Parents of these use to do the same thing, but they grew up and realized it was horrible and discusting and now they must be stopped.
Uhm,,, but there is a reason we don't charge them as adults for murder... so why are we charging them as adults for this?
