I'd venture to say towels use more energy.

1500/60=25w used to dry your hands with the air drier

Even if the manufacture of 1 paper towel took 1 BTU, (which is probably a gross underestimation, 0.29305 KW would be consumed to produce that one paper towel. Since that is 293.05W each peice, that would equal 586.10W equivilant to dry your hands. From an energy standpoint, it would be far more effective to dry your nads using the blow dryer. Howefer from a sanitary standpoint, I still reccomend you use papertowels, (unless you like infecting other people from contaminants on the doorknob to the bathroom).

I figure that just drying your hands on a small towel cloth that you carry around and reuse is the probably the most efficient.

Good point about the hot-air dryer consuming effectively 25 watt-hours to dry your hands.

Can someone here get reasonably solid info on the actual embodied energy content of paper towels? This would be very interesting to know.

Carrying a hand towel around isn't such a good idea, since it will end up being damp and kept in a warm, dark place (i.e. a pocket or purse or backpack etc.), therefore good conditions for bacterial growth.

Re. "the door knob." I saw a proposal that was made about 30 years ago, to replace door knobs in public WCs with foot-operated latches. You step on the latch, the door opens. Until that becomes standard, I'll use a paper towel (the one I just dried my hands with) to open the door.

Meanwhile, population keeps increasing....

That is actually a reccomended practice at where I work, (I work at an old-folks home, {I quit wal-mart}). This way, contaminates from the door knob do not get through the towel on to your hands causing you to be re-contaminated.
