Out of gas in Toronto

We have been getting a lot of calls here at work that a large number of gas stations are out of gas. I couldn't find anything on the web yet. Still, I called a a dozen Essos and Shells in North York/Toronto for our customers. As of now I only found 1 lonely Shell station that still had gas.

Solution: bicycle
Solution 2: Yamaha 49cc scooter with 30 gallons of gasoline in the garage = 6 months of commuting for normal people.

I know it's cold, but what else are you going to do?

No mention of the reason for this? Trucks having trouble driving on the ice, or something similar?
I didn't think that we'd be seeing gas shortages (due to OPEC cuts) this soon.

You first.

We've gotten over 2 feet of snow in the last 4 days, and today half of it melted. The rest is sitting on top of the storm drains, so it's flooding the streets. Tonight it will probably all freeze. The entire city will be a sheet of ice.

As for the gas shortage, I can't say either way. Complaining aside, I actually do ride my bike - even in this weather.

Gas only lasts a few months, due to its complex nature. The volatile components will just evaporate, leaving the heavier stuff behind and thus will be less effective and probably damaging to your car or scooter.

Is it mechanically possible to have a diesel scooter? I've never heard of one but if it's possible, that's what I'd get. Then, with enough homemade oil, you can power yourself forever. Or at least until the scooter breaks down.

I've lived where it was winter for 6 months and summer for 2 months before. Now I live back in Texas where it's the opposite.

I used to walk and take buses/streetcars back then. Today I would ride a scooter if there weren't buses.

Gasoline is viable for at least a year, longer with additives. I've never seen a diesel scooter and don't think that type of thick-walled build is possible with a small engine like what sits on a scooter frame.

Scooters do require lots of maintenance. The engine only lasts 15K-17K miles before it needs a rebuild. At least all the work is very cheap, it's like working on a lawn mower or weed eater.

It works better with a motorcycle, and requires the engine from an old semitrailer reefer unit. Homemade oil either needs to be preheated (a pain in cold weather) or needs to be processed with powdered sodium hydroxide; good luck buying that without ending up on a terrorism watch list.

Why not goto propane or natural gas? Propane stores pretty much indefinitely, as long as the container doesn't leak it out.

As for converting gasoline engines over, thats a different story.

It's hard enough to find a gas station that is open on Christmas Day.

But motorists were finding it especially difficult to top up their tanks yesterday because service stations across Toronto were running on empty -- partly because of the lowest gas prices in the GTA in more than five years.

"With the price (of gas) so low, everyone was filling up. Now we have no gas," said an attendant at an Esso on Kingston Road just east of Scarborough Golf Club Road, who didn't give his name.

The gas station, like many across Kingston Road, ran dry a couple of days ago.
