$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('AgentR', 'T')hey're like a minivan, but half as comfortable; they're like a pickup truck, but half as useful.

Exactly. They're glorified minivans, designed for those who would be better off with a minivan, but want something that screams aggressiveness and conspicuous consumption. Conspicuous consumption is obnoxious, hence my general distaste for large SUVs.

Trucks, on the other hand, I love. Ten times more useful than a soccer-mom-mobile. And the only conspicuous thing about my 20-year-old compact truck is its ugliness.

Maybe it just needs a bath? Bathed mine the other day; looks almost respectable... almost.

You will notice that the compact pickups are the ones doing all the work. The others are "show trucks", and never carry anything but their owner's ego.

A lot of people here drive the show trucks, with the double cab and the big pipes sticking up. They usually have a sticker that says "fear this" and sport another sticker for some other gas toy they own, like Harley-Davidson or something.

A bath definitely helps. It actually looks good after I wash it every other leap year. Or less ugly at least.

Revi, exactly. The biggest, most jacked up monstrosities are also the trucks/SUVs most likely not to have a speck of dust on them. They're not work trucks, they're small dick compensators.

On the other hand, I drive a crew cab F350 at work, and that sucker has worked its ass off, hauling water, trees, tools, people, etc. As far as I know it has never been washed, and it looks it.

I don't hate SUV's, I love them. When I'm sitting next to one at a light, all it takes is a few blips of my throttle to make them race off. That advances my cause -- wasting fuel in America now so other nations won't have fuel to waste in the future. I would waste my own fuel racing around, but I'm not cutting into my preps budget.

70% of our income goes to subsidizing the home equity lines of credit & manufacturers that produce SUV's. They R economic weapons of mass destruction.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ayoob', 'I')'m looking at picking one up right now. It's useful for hauling stuff, towing trailers, etc. Why the hate?

If I end up using it inefficiently, maybe to take my kids to soccer practice, why do you have a problem with that? If I can afford the gas and that's what I want to do, why should you or anyone else say I can't do as I please?

Some people take vacations in Hawaii... do you have a problem with that? They don't NEED to go, they just want to. I'm not entirely sure that anyone needs to make more than $30K a year... should we shut down anyone who makes more? Nobody really NEEDS a computer to post on message boards, right?

Nuttin wrong with them
I have 2....that I use to pickup guests to my resort from the airport, if they dont rent a car. They'll haul a bunch of people and luggage. I wouldn't try to tow with the pieces of junk.
However.
I'm not an idiot.
I don't use them to run to the store or go out to eat.( Sorry-Soccer and sports are entertainment to keep you from thinking)
My old 1976 30 some MPG Landcruiser diesel handles that task just fine ( and it runs on used veggie oil), and it'll tow anything you can hook to it.

Ooh those are awesome. Getting kind of rare though. It seems like the only choices left are mostly fully restored and cost the same as a new truck, or something well beyond my capabilities to maintain or save.

Supporting factory farms is worse than driving an SUV. That said, they're both excessive (unless you use the vehicle for work). Pre-90's no one needed one, why do they now? They don't. Pure entitlement.

I dislike that they became a fashion statement. Some people can genuinely use a large vehicle with little seating. Most don't need one, and I hate seeing all the gas wasted on daily commutes while the Hummers and Expeditions idle in stop & go.

I dislike that they are marketed as the "safe choice", especially to women and mothers. I've read many people say they bought an SUV "for the children" because they're safe. Well, they may be safer if you run into a tree or another SUV than if you were driving a small econo-box, but they're much more prone to rollover than the econo-box, and they're not nearly as nimble to avoid an accident.

I dislike that they're so frigging huge. They blind you at night if you're in a smaller vehicle. They're hard to see around if you're behind one. They more than fill your average parking lot space, so it's hard to get back into your car if one parks next to yours.

It's not that I think they ought to be illegal. I just wish people made more sensible choices. There are plenty of fine vehicles to buy that are better commuters, family vehicles, etc.

I dislike SUVs the same way I dislike all manifestations of form over function. The reason for my dislike is just that - someone chose form over function and next year we may see that they took money out of my pocket when they made that choice (bailouts). I know what a functional SUV, a "work truck" looks like. Everything that does not fit is pretentious foolishness, a misallocation of capital that may in fact have never existed. I could (and do) say the same about, say, furniture, so I am not singling out SUVs for special attention.

Well for one I think the whole concept of using 5000 lbs of steel to move 140 lbs of human is energetically speaking a pretty dumb concept. A concept, which I suspect, has a limited future.

But that aside. I don't hate SUV's. If someone wants to drive an SUV that is fine by me. It is stupid for a variety of reasons. But if you are insistent of sending your money to Saudi Arabia, instead of investing it in your local (and your childrens) economy, be my guest.

But on the other hand, when you choose to drive one you should be prepared to pay the price for it. You never ever hear a Ferrari or a Corvette driver complain about fuel prices. For them it comes with the territory.

Yet I have never heard a more outraged cry for lower fuel prices than from the SUV crowd. And that nags me. When you're driving a volkswagen rabbit you are entitled to complain about fuel prices. When you're driving a piece of metal the size of a medium city you should shut-up and yank the AC yet a bit higher for the heck of it.

Of course there is also an environmental aspect to the story. But to be frank I kinda have given up on the environment. It was lost on us when we decided that outdoor heating on terraces was a brilliant idea.

No hate. The best time to buy a gas guzzler in general is when gas prices are high, buy a hybrid when prices are low.

I suggested Suburban to the wife today just for fun, but it looks like GM/Chrysler are in more of a mess than Ford, so maybe a used Excursion or new Expedition instead.
