Ouch! Sorry about your situation.

Keep your chin up there are a few jobs left out there, hopefully your wife and you can find something to patch you through for a while.

In the mean time you've got preps to live on right?

I played the messages on our work answerphone today and one was from a local recruitment consultancy asking if we had any vacancies because they had lots of new people on their books who had recently been made redundant. Brought it home to me that this is really starting to bite in the local area.

The declining price of oil is having repercussions, I guess. Hard to really say what's going on. But oil going from $10/bbl to $147/bbl back down to 60 in short order is crazy. I think people are unsettled and worried.

cbxer, sorry to hear that.

Bad economic news is all over the place. Folks are getting laid off and plants are closing around here way too often.

Just try to keep your head up and make something happen.

Bummer, man. Things are still tense here after the first round of layoffs a few weeks back. Dodge the bullets you can, and have a practical hobby as a bartering backup plan.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('cbxer55', 'F')riday my wife got laid off from her job as Payroll Secretary for one of the major waste hauling companies.
Today we get informed that G.E. is cancelling all of its orders for wind towers, that we were to start building in January. So I now have a 60 day notice for loss of my job.
Guess we will get to join all the others participating in this new economy. There are many houses in my neighborhood that are for sale, Many for a long time. So that will be out of the picture.

Welcome to the future.

Well cbxer55, I have seen you say a lot of things about others loosing there jobs and how it was all greedy business and they somehow deserved it. Well you know Karma is a bitch and it is a lot different when it hits closer to home.

Welcome to now.

I'm sorry to hear that, cb, that's rough. The times are starting to bite among people close to me now. My friend's son(who was a bit lost and who we were concerned about)got a good job with a building contractor which he really enjoyed, he was learning a lot and kitting up with all the tools. He was recently laid off, along with most of the other guys there. He hasn't been able to find work since and is back to moping and getting into trouble, and we're back to worrying about him. My partner's son has a job with the local branch of one the world's larger computer companies and was about to start a training program which would have given him a lot of new skills and confirmed his position there, but the company is stopping all such programs as part of cost cutting. My mother-in-law has been babysitting and nannying for two families for about 7 years. It keeps her in spending money, and makes her feel busy, wanted and involved in the world. Unfortunately, one of the families earned it's living from real estate, the other from finance 8O They have both ended her employment in the last two weeks(the finance guy's wife didn't even speak to her- just left a note, pretty classy after bringing up her kids for seven years).
Other people suffering are members of my family who have an events catering business which has thrived and grown for years, and employs a lot of people but is now feeling the pinch big time as companys pull back- not too many xmas parties this year...
Personally I haven't been hit yet, but I'm sure I will. People start doing their own gardens and landscaping when times get real tough.
Anyway, hang in there cb, this sh*t will turn around.

That's just it, this won't turn around. Things are bad and they will just get worse. Peak Oil. 9.1% depletion rate. We're screwed.

Personally, I think we've got another few 'rinse and repeat' cycles of recovery, growth, price spikes, bone-crunching demand destruction and-round-we-go-agin left to squeeze out of this stupid system yet. 'Course, I'm usually wrong...

Actually, my post ran counter to the need for eternal optimism, despite the fact that much of the history of civilization is characterized by a subsistence existence, not clapboard houses and 42" teevees.

I do not think we are soon due for a return to glory days.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('cbxer55', 'L')ast I heard, unemployment benefits still exist. Our company honors them during times like these.

Ok. I thought you wouldn't accept them because they are socialist....
