debka.com, which i don't consider to be a valid news site ( i think they're a tool used by pro-Israel factions to inject certain news into the news-sphere ) has reported yet another "Iran will be able to make a nuclear bomb Feb. 1, 2008".
regardless of the date, Israel's concern about the progress of Iran's nuclear tech. has an obvious result - that Israel may do to Iran what they did to Osirak (Iraq's nuclear reactor).
one guess is that Israel is waiting for the next administration to take office before making their move.
an Israel-Iran-US war, added to the current drive-by shooting & poisoning going on in Iraq, would qualify as ... big news.

The Middle East, particularly Iran, is a potential tipping point, according to Gareth Evans, co-chair of the newly formed International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament.
Evans, a former Australia foreign minister, said the world had been "sleepwalking" on the issue of atomic weapons for a decade.
"The devastation that could be wreaked by one major nuclear weapons incident alone puts 9/11 and almost everything else (in) to the category of the insignificant," he said, referring to the attacks inflicted on the United States in 2001.

OK, if you want to be all Sherlock about this, PAY ATTENTION TO THE FIRST 45 SECONDS OF THE INTERVIEW with Powell by Brokaw.
Powell and Brokaw are simply discussing (around 2:40) the initial comments laid out by Powell. It's a combination of the things you all have mentioned here. Careful not to take that statement out of context.
