21 mpg? Is that their boast? Link
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '2')005 Jeep "Liberty" Diesel if you can still provide reasonable fuel economy and maintain SUV virtues [smilie=sign18.gif] ... we averaged a little more than 21 mpg

It's going to take more than 21 mpg when you are competing with Prius 50 mpg.

I read an article in Cycleworld about a turbo diesel motorcycle that gets 150mpg. thats really good, considering it's a sportbike. they said you can tweak the mapping and get 120 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque.

There are some incredible things that can be done to improve mileage, as you mentioned above. Diesel hybrid cars should also be able to hit almost 100 mpg.

SF Engineer, I'm from your neck of the concrete... so are many more here. We should have a Bay Area PO get-together someday. I bet we could gather up a few dozen for a snack and coffee.
Yeah!!! I too was delighted by the news. But the incentives are only a grand... chump change. I'll stand up and cheer louder when the discounts are so deep these pigs can no longer be profitably made or driven.

Hey didn't we all miss something? We were jumping up and down about SUV dying but the article says:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'U').S. sales of the full-size Toyota Tundra pickup truck, which has a gas-guzzling V-8 engine, rose nearly 49 percent last month, while Nissan Motor Co. chalked up a similar rise in sales of its Titan pickup truck.

Are people just shifting from US to Japan to get their gas guzzlers?

I'ld buy a Tundra if I had the cash. As much as the board seems to dislike truckss, I can think of a number of reasons to pick one of these up when the market sinks lower.
One, is the quality of roads going to increase as the costs for rsources climbs? Nope. Much as I like those little Prius, imagine those tiny little wheels smashing around in a potholed decaying road.
Second. Even with the price of fuel rising, you will stilil want a source of power around when it's worthwhile. Think back to those old Model Ts farmers would have. When they needed power, they would hook a PTO to the drive wheel. That's going to be handy for a long time.

Third, If we are to successfully negotiate the next few decades, it will require a relocalization of our cities and our retail infrastructure. Right now China Mart makes money because the last stage of retail distribution has been taken up by the consumer, who now has their own delivery trucks (SUVs). The only way for it to get cheaper is for us all to drive to the central warehouse in St. Louis or something.
But, if people are selling their guzzlers, and there is a need for decent distribution, there is an opportunity to be part of rebuilding your local community. By having a truck after everyone else has sold out, you get to be the corner store. You charge to cover the cost of transpo of course.
The problem with these things is not the trucks, but how we use them. Keep your daily mileage down, keep a moped or a cheap car, keep many bicycles, but pick up one of these things in a couple years at a deep discount.

SUV sales slow down

Unread postby bruin » Tue 15 Mar 2005, 18:35:01

SUV's are also droping in value. No wonder the US government changed the rules on car donations. There's going to be a ton of them.

This article shouldn't surprise anyone. With gas at $2+ a gallon all over the USA, big cars are on their way out. I wonder when people will start giving up their sedans in favor of smaller cars and motorcycles...

ROTFLMAO!

Actually we're having a problem similar to that right now. As everybody knows the cost of housing in California has gone up to the stratospshere...and the commute sure isn't getting any shorter. It's not uncommon to see half a dozen trailers parked at the Wal-Mart parking lot where I live. :-D

No doubt. Although of course on a bike, really a geo metro is almost as bad as an excursion.

After realizing it would cost $100 to fill up his tank,
owner figured it was cheaper just to get rid of his (FINANCED)gas guzzler. :-D
