Beck is a Mormon and he sounds like the bat-shittier side of my Mormon relatives who rant about "blacks in America," "liberal commies," and "Islamic and non-christian barbarians." Basically racist rednecks. Most of whom are severely overburdened with too many kids, one income earner in the family, maxed out credit cards and the biggest McMansions I've ever seen. All of which they feel entitled to, as americans, and all of whom are going to be very unhappy people if they have to lower their standards of living.

My own experience is that the "Pioneer Spirit" has been breed out of my mormon acquaintances. They are still outdoorsy, but that's as far as it gets.

My sister, an RN helping the Katrina victims in Houston, was mugged by several of them on her way home and nearly died. She has had several surgeries, including a few to reconstruct her face, and her "excellent" health insurance gave up about half way through. She had to go bankrupt, wasn't eating, and trying desperately to keep her house. The church wouldn't respond to, or help her out with ANYTHING, not utilities, legal help, or even food. I volunteer at the local Methodist free restaurant and got her in touch with them for some meals.

Maybe the Mormon church is good in a disaster scenario, but in the few instances where folks I know were in individual need, they never helped at all, and you were lucky if they even bothered to call back.
