I say good riddance to bad companies.

These guys consistently made and aggressively marketed enormous gas guzzlers for short-term profit and fought tooth and nail against any CAFE or safety standards. And their unions were pretty much right behind them on these issues.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Denny', '
')Well, maybe its the very end of "Generous Motors".

You're right, but if they don't offer the right product mix (as they call it) then it won't matter how much their overhead gets cut. They STILL won't be profitable.

Chrysler is dead in my book

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'J')apan's Nissan Motor Co. (NSANY:
) isn't willing to put up cash for an alliance with U.S. automaker Chrysler, Bloomberg News reported Thursday, citing two people with knowledge of the matter. Nissan, which has 453.8 billion yen ($4.6 billion) in cash, won't consider a tie-up that would weaken its financial position, said one of them, the report added. Nissan and alliance partner Renault were proposing to acquire around 20% of Chrysler and such an offer was now before private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, The Detroit News reported

No interest in Detroit = great news, the Nissan-Renault alliance better to focus on their forthcomming line of full electrics on one hand and cheap ICE brands on the other (Dacia, Thalia). That's where the market should be going, electrics for the upper middle class/rich and cheapish ICE for the rest..

~900kg, EUR ~8000, New Thalia/Symbol:
http://www.netcarshow.com/renault/2009-symbol/

Renault Symbol Eco-C Gets 74.67 MPG (3.15 litres/100km):
(obviously this is achieved by eco-driving, but not bad for a sedan box)
http://www.indiacar.net/news/n91548.htm

PS some analysts claim the project better place business model means ~ $0.35 per mile (incl. car, batteries, electricity). This might be interesting for some fleets in the west but hardly an option for the average individual guy..

It is sad, as I watch the end, to think that some of the USA's greatest treasures rotted in place and now are worthless, as a whole, or in pieces.

This is what having the highest paid executives in the world gets you. Garbage.

Say they all go bankrupt and PO crash hits. Could the factories in the rust belt be put to good use making wind mills or similar green stuff for a new economy by govt. or private?

Why get sad. just make a good business opportunity ofit and get the community around it. Cars are a waste of resources.

US industry has no concept of diversification. Japanese companies are experts at that. Take Yamaha for instance. They make motorcycles and musical instruments. Talk about two totally different things. Mitsubishi makes cars and consumer electronics. The list goes on.

My friend Art is busy making solar car kits and farm tools. He has more orders than he can handle right now.

We have driven over 650 miles in a month and a half in our car. It makes me think that I want a plug in electric that I can put snow tires on. Maybe a Zenn?

Here's the website: www.sunnev.com

I think that there will be lots of market for an electric car.

Why not make them here in the US?

Chrysler had the GEM cars at their dealerships. Will we be able to get them from some other kind of dealership?

Revi,

How are plug-ins going to perform in our winters?

I had a friend in the late 70s who had a prototype plug-in. It left him stranded a number of times on cold winter days.

Plus, with no cabin heat, it was uncomfortable and dangerous (windshield condensation) to drive on cold days.

As an addendum, my Prius would be non-functional on a number of days in the winter were it not for the gas engine.

A wee push to GM, maybe the last one? Closure this very week?
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Moody's sends GM ratings deeper into junk status
NEW YORK (Associated Press) - Credit ratings agency Moody's Investors Service on Monday cut three of its ratings on General Motors Corp., citing the severe contraction of the U.S. auto market.

Moody's downgraded GM's corporate family and probability of default ratings to "Caa2" from "Caa1," sending them further into non-investment grade, or "junk," status.

The agency also cut GM's speculative grade liquidity rating to "SGL-4" from "SGL-2" with a negative outlook, and placed its "B3" senior unsecured rating on the company's finance arm, GMAC, on review for a possible downgrade.

Moody's said the steep decline in the U.S. auto sector will likely outpace GM's ability to respond effectively, even with the assistance from the $25 billion low-interest loan program from the federal government.

Ford is up 2 cents today, despite the tanking of the stock market.

Why?

Cheap gas. And the printing presses have just been turned on starting today.

Mostly it's just the cheap gas. In 1979 it was over $1.00/gallon. Now it's under $2.00 in places. After inflation that means gas is darn near free now compared to 1979.
