Let's assemble a Glossary

Unread postby Ferretlover » Wed 01 Oct 2008, 10:04:46

Please list the term and its definition. I will sort and alphabetize them later. If you have a slighty different definition, please do note it. To start:

EROEI = Energy Returned on Energy Invested
TPTB = The Powers That Be
TEOTWAWKI = The End of the World as We Know it
TSHTF = The Sh*t Hits the Fan

Abbreviations and definitions of terms commonly used in the oil and gas industry.
Noted.-FL I've settled on using the more self-explanatory "kb" for "thousand barrels" than the industry standard “MBbls," however; I noticed writers on peak oil use a whole array of different terms for measurement.

As Joeltrout pointed out we don't yack much about the actual FF industry here much anymore...but here are a few contributions anyway, with links:

FF = fossil fuel
SPR = Strategic Petroleum Reserve
MMS = Minerals Management Service
EIA = Energy Information Administration
Noted.-FL
Some fellow sites:

LATOC = Life After the Oil Crash
TOD = The Oil Drum
EB = Energy Bulletin

Will chip in more later. How about some of the financial voodoo?

Thanks, Dude. Yes, I agree, we do need our fellow posters who are in the financial fields to chime in here.

Standard Oil once used blue colored barrels for shipping some of it's oil. That's how 'bbl' was started.

what we're experiencing now.

as far as the linguistic history of the term, Clusterf*ck is a term that Kunstler popularized. I think it was military in origin, like the term "circle jerk", which I first heard used by an engineer at Litton in New Jersey.

did you know that the phpBB software takes any word with the F'word, like "fucking idiot bubble chimp president", and replaces it with Fark ? at least it could get the tense right. farking idiot bubble chimp president.
