Portland PeakFest - Sat Oct 4th, Powell's City of Books

Burn a few hydrocarbons and come on down to Powell's, we'll meet in the Anne Hughes Coffee Room, now called the World Cup Coffee & Tea Room for some reason. If we run out of things Peak Oil to talk about The Dude will describe to you how grimy and dimly lit Powell's used to be.

Things kick off ca. 4 PM. Further suggestions welcome of course. We'll hash things out a bit here and then I'll announce over at TOD as well.

See y'all soon!

I keep reading that title, in my state of delirium, as Portland PorkFest. At least I'm not reading this on porkoil.com, just yet. Maybe another day of fasting will bring that about.

It's about 800 miles round trip for me, but I think I may try to make it. I have always wanted to see Portland.

I'm using "Fest" jocosely, BTW. The venue's about the size of a modern American living room. We're just getting together to match names w/faces.

Would be awesome if some out-of-towners showed anyway, of course.

Dunno about pork. How about a marionberry scone?

Just saw this. I'll be there.

Sounds like a nice time. I wonder what the USA will be like in two weeks? :)

Will there be a mosh pit to celebrate The End Of The World As We Know It? I'm sure Powell's management wouldn't mind.

I might be there. I generally do my best to avoid social events, but I'm intrigued by the notion of meeting some fellow Peak Oil doomers.

Hey there Loki. Haven't seen ya around much.

Trying to get a friend down from Vancouver as well, he convinced their PD in the space of two weeks to go easy or give up on A) having unmarked cop cars pull over motorists and B) give up with the 24-esque kicking down doors in raids - some little old lady in another town accidentally got a visit from the ATF and she winged a couple of 'em with her .38...very interesting guy who'd be a welcome addition, he's savvy to the resource depletion as well.

Might give the baristas a bit of a chill, yes. But they invited JHK to speak at the Beaverton store, what do they expect?

Well shoot, we have coffee houses in Southeastern Virginia. I'd like to have a peakfest in this area. Are there enough people in this region to make it worthwhile?

I'd also like to match names with faces and spend a little time with like-minded folks. My dear husband thinks I'm a certifiable nut.

You might want to check out the Solar Tour that is occurring nation wide on Saturday October 4th also. I see that there is a charge for it in Portland, but I know that around here it is a good chance to see real people at home with their renewable energy systems or low energy homes. We'll be busy here in Wisconsin on Saturday talking to visitors to our place, I hope.

This afternoon, five (!!) of us met for a wonderful three hour visit punctuated by coffee and talk of optimism and doom... mostly doom.

I walked into the Powell's Bookstore coffee shop at 4pm wearing my avatar on my t-shirt (No, not this one. The one from earlier) and was immediately ID'd by The Dude. Now he is one cool cat. He right off the bat walked straight up to me in the small standing room only coffee area, as I was standing near the trash can and asked, "are you eastbay?" There were quite a few others he could have asked but he correctly picked me.

We found a place to sit and sat down with The Dude placing a copy of The Long Emergency upright on the table. About one minute later, Jeremy, from the Portland Peak Oil Task Force spotted us and seconds later Hawkcreek and his wife waltzed over and joined us. It was one of the nicest three hours I've ever enjoyed!

We talked about permaculture, gardening, oil depletion, The (coming) Crash, inflation vs deflation, PM's, farming, off-grid living (Hawkcreek and his wife have pulled this off nicely!!), setting up a peak oil task force in my area, local politics, Portland's unique survivability attributes (The Dude is a walking encyclopedia of local facts and information), the Portland Peak Oil Task Force, waste, human waste, and probably more but my memory ain't what it once was so Hawkcreek and The Dude can fill us in.

I hope we can do this again. A great afternoon! :)

It was a good way to spend a few hours. Shame we can't do it more often.
It was my first time to talk to people face to face, that agree we have a problem.
And I learned some stuff. Good comments about permaculture and gardening.
Many thanks to The Dude, and Eastbay, and Jeremy.
Make the next one in Spokane, though. I burned about $145 in diesel to get to Portland. That would have run my back-up generator for 6 months.
By the way, the bookstore was great! Best Sci Fi section I have ever seen.

I was prepared to pester total strangers for 20 minutes if need be. Whatever it takes. I like to pester. Luckily we showed up roughly at the same time.

Ditto! Jeremey was a great addition, hope he shows if we have a repeat. Never did figure out how he knew about it in the first place - think someone at TOD tipped him about it.

Great that Mr. and Mrs. Hawkcreek made that long drive down. Never got around to pitching my idea for making NE Washington a tourist hot spot - fire up Dry Falls again. A waterfall 10 times the size of Niagara? How do you top that? 8)
