peak oil and our society...we in western civ want the good things in life...and appear rich...so we can make our personal stock better...so we can get some good ass...for real...just a thought...isn't our existence predicated to just continuing the species?

Unfortunately, as well as being predicated on continuance of our species you can also say that the success of society is measured by it's size and growth. Supposedly smart people such as economists have a view of the world that includes the limitlessness of resources and the ability to switch from one resource to another as easily as one would flick a light switch. They call it market forces, i call it blindness.

Sustained growth is flawed condition, but not only is it revered by economists, but our politicians and policy makers alike. The japanese think they're in a recesssion if they have less than 3% economic growth. Consequently, humans are likely to bring about their own suffering in the years to come and i'd be surprised if we're not a shadow of our former self in a few hundred years time.
