Analysis: what is wardriving? By Jonathan Richards 7 Aug 2008:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he charge sheet for the 11 alleged conspirators in what the US Department of Justice calls "the largest hacking and identity theft case ever prosecuted" identifies a technique known as wardriving.
Wardriving involves a computer user driving around searching for insecure wireless networks. All the hacker needs to steal credit card and other information from a shop is a standard laptop that picks up the signal from the wireless network in a store.
If the security on the shop's wireless network is weak, the hacker can break in within a matter of seconds in some cases — gaining access to information held by the indivudual store, such as credit card numbers, as well other information kept on the company network to which the store is connected. …

It amazes me how many people don't lock up their networks. Take any wardriving scanner and drive around a bit, you'll pick up tonnes of open networks. My brother has had free internet access for over 3 years now.

And thanks to newer longer range standards, the potential for hacking is staggering. There are 4 networks available on my wireless connection. Fortunately 3 of us are secure. I'm tempted one day to email the people with the unsecured one (with their own email account) to enable their security.

Or maybe I should just enable their security for them
